How do you know if you are a candidate for a breast lift mastopexy procedure?

Women who come to Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center and have saggy breasts (breast ptosis) are ideal candidates for a breast lift.  A breast lift repositions or “lifts” sagging breasts due to the effects of pregnancy, breast-feeding, or weight loss.  Flaccid and loose breast skin with loss of elasticity is unable to support the weight of the breast and this condition is termed breast ptosis and can be classified as either first-degree, second-degree, third-degree, or pseudoptosis.  The degree of breast ptosis is measured with respect to your nipple as it relates to your bottom breast crease.

Many of our patients also choose to have a combination procedure consisting of breast lift with breast augmentation in order to achieve the most desirable effect during a single operation.

What are the surgical steps involved during a breast lift mastopexy surgery?

During the breast lift  procedure the nipple-areola complex is permanently elevated to a new and higher chest position and the excess skin is removed and tightened, thus restoring your breasts to a more youthful appearance, with more fullness and projection.

Incisions for a breast lift are placed around the dark skin of your areola and/or along the underside breast crease thus creating an “anchor” incision — known as a Wise pattern or vertically known as the “lollipop” incision.  Dr. Thornton makes every effort to minimize the size of your scars and to make them as inconspicuous as possible using natural creases and folds.

What is my expected recovery following breast lift mastopexy surgery?

Following your breast lift procedure, you will recover at the surgery center until you are safe to be discharged and go home with an appropriate care giver.  You will be provided with post operative instructions, narcotic pain medication, muscle relaxation medication, antibiotics, and nausea medication.  You may take a shower the next morning.  Dr. Thornton will monitor your progress weekly to monthly for the first 6 months and at 12 months.  Postoperative before and after photographs will be taken at 4 months as this is the average time where you will begin to notice the most optimal appearance.  Results will vary from one patient to the other and patients are expected to have realistic expectations following breast lift.  On average, patients are expected to resume minimal activity within 10 – 14 days following surgery and a full recovery by 4 months.

Where can I see Before and After photos of breast lift surgery?

Dr. Thornton has an extensive breast photo gallery with before and after photos of various breast lift and breast lift augmentation procedures.

How much does breast lift surgery cost?

There are a number of factors determining the cost of a breast lift surgery as each consultation is tailored to suit your needs.  Some patients will require only a breast lift while others may require a breast lift with augmentation.  Professional surgeon fees, operating room fees (surgery center fees) and anesthesia fees for general anesthesia will be itemized individually on your quote.

What are the expectations during my breast lift consultation with Dr. Thornton?

During your breast lift consultation, you will meet privately and exclusively with  Dr. Michael Thornton where you will collectively share in the decision making process about your personal needs, desires, and expectations regarding a breast lift.  Dr. Thornton will take measurements of various key areas of your breasts and demonstrate scar placement and proposed elevation of your new nipple and areola.

What are Dr. Thornton’s surgical qualifications?

Dr. Michael L. Thornton is a double-board certified cosmetic surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery who completed an advanced fellowship in Cosmetic Surgery, accredited and recognized by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, where he gained concentrated knowledge in all major areas of aesthetic and cosmetic plastic surgery.  Dr. Thornton attends yearly national cosmetic surgery meetings and advanced courses to provide the latest techniques in aesthetic cosmetic surgery.  He will personally see you during every post-operative visit following your surgery and actively engage in your healing process to provide the highest physician-level care.

Where will Dr Thornton perform my breast lift surgery?

Breast lift procedures are performed under general anesthesia at Baylor Surgicare at Mansfield, a AAAHC certified out-patient surgery center, located in Mansfield, Texas.  On average, a breast lift procedure with or without breast augmentation will take 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the procedure and other client dependent personal circumstances.  Furthermore, all breast lift procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists and certified anesthesia providers.

How Much Does a Breast Lift Cost?

At Mansfield Cosmetic Surgery Center, Dr. Thornton’s surgeon fee for a breast lift mastopexy ranges between $4000 – $5000 depending upon the complexity of the procedure and/or whether you decide to have saline or silicone breast augmentation at the same time.   In addition, it is important to take into consideration the costs of operating room fees and/or general anesthesia-related fees.  Unfortunately, private health insurance plans will not cover the cost for a breast lift mastopexy, as it is considered cosmetic surgery and not medically necessary.

How much more does it cost by adding breast augmentation to a breast lift procedure?

The addition of saline or silicone breast augmentation with a breast lift will increase the cost by several thousands of dollars depending upon the choice of implant (saline vs silicone) and due to the increased expense of surgeon fees, operating room fees and anesthesia time.

Does it cost more for saline or for silicon implants during breast lift mastopexy?

The cost for silicone gel breast implants is higher than saline implants due to the manufacturing process.

Is it more affordable to perform breast lift mastopexy and breast augmentation at the same time?

Many patients choose to have a combined procedure consisting of breast lift mastopexy and simultaneous breast augmentation with either saline implants or silicone gel implants in order to achieve the most desirable effect during a single stage operation.  The choice to either have a mastopexy alone or to have a mastopexy in combination with breast augmentation depends upon if you want more breast volume and upper pole fullness.  The typical cost for a breast lift and augmentation ranges between $6500 to $8500.

What are the typical postoperative expectations following a breast lift mastopexy?

On average, a breast lift mastopexy procedure with or without breast augmentation will take 4 to 5 hours to complete, depending upon the complexity of the procedure.  In addition, all breast lift mastopexy procedures are performed using general anesthesia as provided by board-certified anesthesiologists and certified anesthesia providers.

Following your breast lift mastopexy procedure, you will recover at the surgery center for several hours until you are safe to be discharged home with an appropriate adult caregiver.  You will be provided with post-operative instructions, narcotic pain medication, muscle relaxation medication, antibiotics, and nausea medication.  Drains are not typically placed during a breast lift mastopexy but in some cases they are.  All stitches are placed under the skin and will dissolve on their own.  You may take a shower within 24-28 hours of your surgery, as the incisions are covered with waterproof surgical glue and paper tape.  It is also important to have a primary caregiver take care of you following surgery for a few days while someone else is also taking care of any young children.  Most patients are able to resume light activity in one or two weeks although you will have lifting restrictions for several months.
