With a do-it-yourself your first and foremost protect yourself as you are less likely to touch touch your face and pick up droplets from other people. If you are infected, the mask can help reduce the risk of transmission. However, this is very dependent on the duration of wear and the material of the mask. If you feel sick or have had contact with sick people - stay at home.
Before putting it on, you should wash your hands thoroughly. The mask should fit well. Your mouth and nose should be completely covered. As soon as the mask gets wet, you need to change it. You should only touch the strap when putting it on and off. The easiest way to do this is by undoing the bands behind your ears. You should keep the worn mask in a plastic bag or clean it directly. Don't forget to wash your hands again.
The mask should be disinfected after each use. Depending on the duration and frequency of use, I recommend boiling the masks for five minutes in a saucepan or baking them at 65-70° for at least 30 minutes. You can of course also wash them in the washing machine at 60°. However, I cannot guarantee that (especially the colourful) masks will discolour other pieces.
As much as possible, the masks are made of cotton fabric. I didn't purchase any new fabric for the masks. All masks are made of fabric from Grandma's sewing box, souvenirs from travels, old sofa cushions and tablecloths. The fabric was of course washed before using them.
I have baked all masks in the oven at 80 degrees for at least 30 minutes before shipping. This kills all types of bacteria and viruses. In order to be on the safe side, it is recommended to clean it before the first use.
The more masks you sew, the less time you need for each mask. With all the preparatory and reworking, it took me an average of 25-30 minutes per mask. Would you like to sew a mask yourself? I have written a short guide here.
All masks get shipped from Amsterdam, Netherlands. The cost for the shipping are dependent on the number of masks (and their weight). You can find out more about the weight of the masks here.
