All masks are individual pieces that have been produced using the same pattern. However, there are a few differences due to the different materials, which means that the sizes vary.

About the Process

I was asked by many people how to sew a mask. This is a small guide here. Just as a little tip: You will probably find much more detailed and better instructions on YouTube ;)

For a mask you need approximately:

2x pieces of fabric (30x30)
40 cm elastic band
30 cm craft wire
Sewing thread

In addition, it is recommended to do the whole thing with the sewing machine (and not by hand) and to iron the fabric after each phase with a steam iron.

Cutting the fabric to the right size

It makes sense to start this endeavor with a prototype out of paper. This way you can see exactly how much material you need. You can later use the paper as a template to cut the fabric to the correct format. For one mask, you need two squares (30x30cm) of clean fabric.

Overcasting both fabrics

The next step is to sew the two pieces of fabric together. For this you fold two edges and sew it into a small strip (I think they call it cuff) that is as wide as your little finger.
You can also use only one fabric - but then the masks are not so sturdy and are more permeable to droplets.

Preparing elastics & wires

If you want to make more than one mask, I recommend preparing all the wires and ribbons at the same time. If available, roommates or children can ask for help as it is a pretty boring job (don't tell them). For the masks I used two elastics of about 15-20cm each. The wires must be a bit shorter than the long side of the mask. 15cm should be enough.

Ironing the fold

Now that all the preparatory work is done, the nice part of the work begins - if you like ironing. To have the wonderful opening effect, the masks must be ironed first. After 100 masks you get the hang of it, but it is a bit more complicated at the beginning. I would recommend laying out fold by fold before ironing them in. This works well if you put your two thumbs on the lower side of the fabric (where the little strip is that you created earlier) and use your index fingers to fold the fabric over your thumb. You can then put your thumb on the new fold again and repeat until you have 3-4 folds. Then you iron your creation at the highest level for a few seconds until they remain in place.

Adjust size of elastics and wires before sewing

Now comes the tedious part of the masks. First you have to put the wires through the cuff. The thicker the fabric, the easier it is. As soon as the wire is in the cuff, you can place the elastics. I would recommend doing this first with pins to see which length is best suited for your head. When you have found the right length, sew the mask on each side. This way you close the cuffs and fasten the elastics. Make sure to sew a double seam (short to the front and back) at the beginning and end of the seam so that it doesn't open later (e.g. when washing). If you sew a lot of masks you can do it one after the other, then you get such a fun mobile as in the picture.

Finishing up

Since you certainly want to wash the masks from time to time in the washing machine, I recommend closing all stitches well. In my opinion it looks nicer too. You can do this by sewing a long "fabric tube". Thats is quite easy. You fold a remainder of the fabric on the back side to a 2-3 cm long strip. Then you make a stich a long the full length to get the "fabric tube". With a clasp pin you can now turn this hose to the face side. Now all you have to do is cut small pieces and sew them on each side of the mask.

... and tidying the room.

if you're messy like me, the final step will be tidying up. If you live with other people and your mask project took place in a common area, think about apologising to your housemates about the chaos :).
