Dear parents/carers,
I can't quite believe this is our final newsletter of the year! As another successful academic year comes to an end, I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your incredible support. I’m so proud to have led such an amazing school and caring community over the last four years. You will see in our bumper edition of the newsletter, there have been so many exciting activities and fantastic accomplishments. As I shared with you last week, from September, I will be taking on an additional role as Executive Headteacher to support our Trust’s sister secondary school, New Line Learning Academy. This is a temporary arrangement until April 2025, whilst New Line Learning seek to appoint their own Head of School. Mr Sutton will take on the role as Head of School at Cornwallis, providing the daily operational leadership. I am really looking forward to working with Mr Sutton, and together, we will ensure a seamless transition.
I would like to wish you and your family a relaxing summer break, and look forward to welcoming students back in September.
Mrs McMahon
Headteacher
Dear parents/carers,
I would like to begin by thanking all of you for your continued support during this period of transition. As I said to the staff when my new position was introduced: the goals Mrs McMahon has for Cornwallis, are goals I share, and furthermore, I will work tirelessly to achieve. My career at Cornwallis began in 2008, in a very different school (quite literally a different building knocked down in 2010), under different leadership in an altogether different educational era. We talk about the 'Cornwallis journey' quite frequently, and I very much feel a part of the last 16 years of that journey. After all, Cornwallis is where I learnt my craft: I learnt how to teach effectively at Cornwallis; I learnt how to manage effectively at Cornwallis; I learnt how to lead effectively at Cornwallis, and it is both a pleasure and a privilege to accept the interim headship of our school. My primary objectives are quite simple: to proceed with the work of my predecessors, ensuring Cornwallis continues its upward trajectory in terms of popularity and maintaining our position as being Maidstone's comprehensive school of choice; a continued rigorous focus on driving academic standards and outcomes, all of which underpinned by the core values and ethos that form the foundations of the community of young people we serve.
I wish you all a restful Summer, and look forward to welcoming you back in September.
Mr Sutton

SEPTEMBER UNIFORM UPDATE
Dear Parents and Carers,
As we reach the end of the Summer holidays, I would like to take the opportunity to revisit the uniform expectations. Uniform is an important part of a school’s identity. It reinforces who we are as a community and helps students to feel pride in their school. It also helps prepare students for life after school where many will have to dress smartly and/or wear a uniform for work.
The uniform policy is available on our website School Uniform - Cornwallis Academy. Please see additional guidance that provides further clarification on what is and is not acceptable uniform.
If you have any questions about the guidance, please do not hesitate to contact the relevant year team. If there are extenuating circumstances, please contact the relevant Head of Year and/or Student Support Manager to discuss.
Mrs Clubb, Deputy Headteacher
CLASSROOM CHAMPIONS
As this year comes to a close, it is truly heart-warming to reflect on the fantastic learning that has taken place. Firstly, a huge well done to Year 11 and Year 13 on completing their exams. Both year groups conducted themselves in exemplary fashion and we wish them all the best for results day. The rest of the school completed their end of year exams and results show how positive the year has been. Some particular highlights from this term include our Art Department’s ‘Shaun the Sheep’ being launched for the Kent Hospice trail in Maidstone, the Performing Arts Department’s various showcases and the History Department’s research project into Maidstone’s involvement in WWI.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION
The Summer Term at Cornwallis has seen lots of Duke of Edinburgh Activities take place. Year 9 have been working towards their Bronze Award, with Year 10 working towards their Silver Award.
The first ever cohort of Silver Award students completed both their practice and qualifying expeditions in May 2024. 14 students spent 3 days, and 2 nights hiking and camping around Kingsdown/ Deal/ Dover to test their navigation and camping skills. They were all lucky enough to witness the Northern Lights display from the campsite too!
The four students who were new to Duke of Edinburgh (having not entered Bronze) did well in demonstrating excellent skills, resilience and team work. After the expedition the students presented to Mrs McMahon, Mr Sutton alongside their Heads of Year, Mr Spurling and Miss Perry, and I am very pleased to announce that all students have successfully passed their Expedition Section.
The Bronze Award's expedition season kicked off in June 2024. Spending a day learning their map reading skills across the South Downs, students camped overnight on the school field to complete their practice expedition.
The weekend of the 13/14th July saw Bronze participants complete their Qualifying Expedition in the North Downs. Commencing at Wye Nature Reserve, participants waked through the North Downs, and across the Pilgrims Way, reaching Westwell in the afternoon. The weather took a turn as tents were pitched, but the resilience of all participants should be commended. Luckily, the rain only lasted a few hours, and students were able to cook outdoors and enjoy some rest and relaxation at camp. Day two saw students navigate through King's Wood and reach Chilham, successfully completing their Expedition. Well done to all students who passed their Expedition.
Year 8 can now enrol for the Bronze Award, to begin in September 2024. For an enrolment form please email dclapp@cornwallisacademy.com

A huge thank you to Miss Austen, Mrs Gollan, Mr Lee, Miss Parker, Mr & Mrs Sperryn, and Mrs Watts for all their help during the Expedition season.
Mr D Clapp
DofE Manager
Students from Year 7 to 9 recently participated in a fantastic three-day Enrichment Week, packed with a variety of activities both on and off site. The aim was to offer enriching experiences that extended beyond the classroom, helping to develop the cultural capital of our students.
The students engaged in an impressive array of activities, including: Harry Potter Studios, Fishing, Watercolour Art, Cake Decorating, Building Shakespeare’s Globe, Laser Tag, Theme Parks and these were just a few highlights—there was so much more! We were able to offer almost 20 activities to choose from each day.
Each activity was carefully chosen to provide learning opportunities and experiences aimed at broadening the students’ horizons and developing their cultural awareness. Whether through the arts, sports, history, or science, every event was designed to be both educational and enjoyable.
We are incredibly proud to report that the behaviour of our students throughout the week was impeccable. Their enthusiasm, respect, and positive attitude was a credit to our school community.
A huge thank you goes to our dedicated staff for organising and facilitating these activities. Their hard work and commitment were instrumental in making Enrichment Week a success. We also extend our gratitude to parents for their unwavering support and encouragement.
Enrichment Week was a triumph, showcasing the best of what our school community has to offer. We look forward to continuing to provide such opportunities that foster growth, learning, and fun for all our students.
It has been a genuinely inspiring year in Art. We have seen our scholarship groups continue to increase in numbers and our Art Club evolve as a unified group of members.
The year in Art culminated with the A Level and GCSE Exhibition. Visitors to the department were treated to highlights such as the wide range of sculptures and mixed media work from our year 11s and stunning photographs and paintings by our year 13s.
As in previous years, we are proud to recognise Cornwallis students who have successfully gained places to pursue Art beyond A Level, notably Abbie Payne who is going to pursue Fine Art and Christine Phiri who has achieved a place to study Architecture.
In other years, the Key Stage 3 Scholarship groups have continued to make contributions to the wider community. The Year 8s exhibited work in Maidstone Museum. Year 9 submitted work to Spirited Arts run by the National Association of Teachers of Religious Education, while the model sheep painted by Year 7 can be seen throughout July and August in Maidstone’s Art Trail.
STEM DAYS
At the beginning of July we had a fabulous time hosting year 5 students from Boughton Monchelsea and Loose Primary School for our exciting STEM days. Students were able to explore the wonders of science, dive into the world of computing, tackle engineering challenges, and crack some mind bending math's puzzles. The two days were packed with learning, insightful questions and fun. These outreach opportunities are also a fabulous means for some of our prospective students to familiarise themselves with Cornwallis Academy and begin to foster a passion for learning at a secondary level.
The students were a credit to the schools and a huge thank you to the staff at Loose and Boughton for making the event such a success.
On Wednesday the 10th of July Year 12 students took part in a Careers Day to inform and support them for their next steps. Students engaged with speakers covering topics such as apprenticeships, employability and 'money matters' as well as a UCAS personal statement writing session. As a sixth form community we understand that there are many pathways our students may wish to explore moving forward and it is imperative that they receive valuable workplace information in order to put themselves in the best position when applying for their onward route as well as having the ability to learn important life skills such as how tax works and how to read and check payslips. Students thoroughly enjoyed the day and left with invaluable knowledge. We look forward to many further opportunities to support them in the next academic year.
YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAYS
On Thursday 4th and Friday 5th July, we welcomed our new year 7 students in September for their transition visits. The transition days are designed to support the students in acclimatising to their new school environment, as well as giving them the opportunity to meet new people and staff. The aim is for all students to gain more confidence in attending Cornwallis Academy in September, making their transition and smooth and successful as possible.
When students arrived, they were asked to line up in their tutor groups, of which they will be a part of from September. Students spent the morning completing their biometrics and school photo, before Mrs McMahon delivered an assembly to them. The assembly focused on the wonderful progress Cornwallis Academy has made over the years, and what it means to be a part of our fantastic school community. After the assembly, students were put into small groups to complete the treasure hunt task. The aim of this activity is to get the students wandering around the school, identifying where different subject areas are. After break, students spent the remainder of the day in subject-specific sessions, including Mathematics, English, Art, Design & Technology and Languages. Miss Edwards and I tried to visit as many sessions as possible, and it was brilliant to see the enthusiasm from the students, exactly what we want to see from them in September.
The second day was an opportunity for students to get to know their fellow tutees better. Tutors led icebreaker and team-building challenges, looking for students to work with others they may not know. I also led their second assembly across their transition days, this time informing them of the school's incredibly high expectations and standards. It is essential that all incoming students have a firm understanding of what is going to be expected of them every day. The students spent the mid-morning and afternoon sessions experiencing more subjects, including PE, History, Geography, Drama and Dance. Again, the students were absolutely fantastic and had a wonderful time.
I hope that the transition days have eased some nerves and worries. Starting secondary school is a huge change, however at Cornwallis Academy we will do our upmost to ensure that all students feel supported from the very beginning. I wish the students all the very best in their final couple of weeks at primary school and that they also have an enjoyable summer.
We look forward to welcoming them to Cornwallis Academy on Wednesday 4th September.
Mr King
YEAR 12 INDUCTION DAY
Following the completion of the GCSE exam series, we invited our prospective year 12 students to come along and spend a couple of days with us to get a flavour of what they can expect from life at the Trust Sixth Form at Cornwallis Academy.
We were delighted to welcome not only students who have been at Cornwallis previously, but also those from our sister school New Line Learning and a large number of students who are hoping to join us from a other schools in the local area and beyond.
The first day was spent attending taster sessions for the subjects the students have indicated a wish to study. This is particularly beneficial for students who have chosen subjects such as Psychology and Criminology that are new to them. These days can also cement student choices but can also lead to students changing their options - if this is the case for your child, please ask them to message me through Kent Choices and I can make the changes for them.
Day two was much more informal and was what has become a bit of a traditional fun day. The students had a great time on the inflatables with the 20 foot high slide proving very popular. Everyone enjoyed the complimentary ice creams too.
I hope that the students enjoyed the two days as much as we did and I look forward to welcoming them into year 12 in September.
Please keep an eye on the Kent Choices platform as information about enrolment will be shared this week.

SPORTS DAY
On Thursday 18th July students from Year 7 to 9 participated in our highly anticipated Annual House Sports Day. The event was a vibrant mix of traditional and modern activities, providing a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their athletic abilities and team spirit.
The day featured a diverse array of events, ensuring there was something for everyone:
Track and Field Events: Students competed in classic athletic disciplines, including sprints, long-distance running, and shot put.
Old School Game: Fun and nostalgic games like sack races, egg and spoon races, and giant inflatable twister brought smiles and laughter.
Inflatable Obstacle Course: These challenging and entertaining courses added a unique twist to the day, combining fitness and fun.
We witnessed some superb individual performances, with students pushing their limits and achieving personal bests. Equally impressive was the teamwork displayed during the rugby and football tournaments. The camaraderie and sportsmanship shown by all participants truly embodied the spirit of Cornwallis. The competition was fierce, but in the end, Scotney House emerged triumphant, taking first place. A huge congratulations to Mr. Finch and all the members of Scotney House for their outstanding performance and well-deserved victory.
Blessed with sunny weather, the day was not only competitive but also filled with fun and enjoyment. The presence of the ice cream van added a delightful touch, and the treats were a hit with students and staff alike.
This year’s Sports Day was a resounding success, highlighting the athletic talent and school spirit that make our community so special. We look forward to many more days of healthy competition and fun in the years to come.
Year 8 Humanities trip to Rochester
On Thursday, 21st March, our Year 8 students from Cornwallis Academy embarked on an enriching humanities trip to Rochester, Kent. This educational excursion encompassed the subjects of Geography, History, and Religious Education (RE), providing a dynamic learning experience outside the classroom. The primary objective of the trip was for students to conduct an environmental quality survey at two distinct locations along Rochester High Street. This hands-on activity allowed them to apply their classroom knowledge in a practical setting, focusing on various environmental variables. Students worked in groups to collect data on factors such as air quality, noise levels, litter presence, and pedestrian flow. The goal was to compare these variables between the two locations, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.
By engaging in fieldwork students developed invaluable experience in data collection and analysis. They learned how to use survey instruments, record observations accurately, and interpret data effectively. The trip also facilitated the development of essential skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. Students collaborated effectively within their groups, learning to work together towards a common goal. The integration of Geography, History, and RE allowed students to make connections across different subjects. Visits to historical sites like Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral enriched their understanding of cultural heritage and its geographical context. The students behaved brilliantly, and all participated in different activities across the subjects and were a credit to Cornwallis Academy.
Year 12 Geography trip to London
In April of this year, as part of their A level studies, Year 12 students visited several places in central London to consider ‘what makes a place’ and how change impacts urban areas and the people who live in them.
We visited Hays Galleria, Canary Wharf, Mudchute and Brick Lane. Students used various primary data collection techniques to gain both a deeper understanding of these places and also to prepare for their forthcoming Non Examined Assessment [NEA] which is an independent investigation based on content they learn on the course.
The trip was a success – with students articulating their varying perceptions of the differences between places and how this made them feel.
Year 12 visit to Clockhouse Farm
In November of 2023, Mrs Ford organised for our A Level students to visit Clockhouse Farm, which is one of the UK’s leading producers of sustainably grown fruit – employing state of the art techniques to ensure that fruit is intensively, yet sustainably grown.
Year 12 students were given a tour of the greenhouses and water heat exchange facilities and also got to taste some of the produce! They met Thorvald – a robot who delivers insects to the plants to combat pests and considered the future of sustainable farming in the south east.
Year 10 visit to Clockhouse Farm
Following the successful visit by our A level students earlier in the year, a number of Year 10 geographers were invited back to the farm in June. Whilst there we were shown around the Yalding site and got to see an intensive farm in ‘full swing’. The sustainability of the farm was our primary focus as this links directly to one of the units studied at GCSE.
Students also enjoyed some excellent blackberries and got to pick their own raspberries too!
Year 7 Humanities trip to Canterbury
With a view to exploring a historically important city through the different lenses of Geography, RE and History, a number of Year 7 students. For the Geography component, we examined the tourism aspect of Canterbury, making links back to its cathedral and the pilgrimage that people would make to visit it. We conducted environmental quality surveys and identified aspects of the city that may have made it a tourist hotspot.
While on the Geography part of the circuit, students were fortunate to have a knowledgeable local working as a volunteer, keen to share some of the old stories, spoken about by clerks and employees for many years. An ex-teacher colleague too, now serving as a guide in the cathedral, put his educator hat back on to speak to students while we were waiting to set off. A fascinating day out, both for students and staff.
Year 10 GCSE fieldwork # 1-Herne Bay beach
Students are required to conduct a study of an element of physical geography, so we organised a trip to Herne Bay. On a rather miserable day of weather, approximately 45 enthusiastic year 10 students descended upon the Herne Bay beach, along with several other schools.
Students were required to collect data that we will later use to see if natural processes are being interrupted by man-made sea defences. The data needed to be of good quality so that it can be drawn up later and presented and they did not disappoint. Lots of hard work was done and lot of happy, if tired year 10 students returned that day with a good idea of how content taught in the classroom could be applied in the field.
Year 10 GCSE fieldwork # 2-Canterbury
The second geography trip saw us visit Canterbury to examine a very common human issue in cities: Transport and Traffic. The plan was to identify the impacts of large volumes of traffic passing by a key location in the city and determine if there were any viable alternatives to getting into the city other than by car.
After some more unfortunate weather, our determined students spoke to local people, visitors and even students to gain an insight in to transport issues in Canterbury, as well as conducting environmental quality surveys and car/footfall counts. The data collected in both days out has already begun to be collated and presented, with students using Digimap software in many cases to create some outstanding work
Enrichment trip # 1 and 2-Coastal Geography
Despite a customary poor weather report and initial weather warnings for the first day, we saw good conditions on both days, particularly for the second day, where sun cream was definitely a good idea. The two groups were able to study the issues that face Herne Bay seafront and beach, looking at it like a geographer would, identifying what happens each day, predicting what would happen during the year and how we can protect our interests while also being aware of our impact on the natural environment.
With such small groups, we were able to investigate the issues fully, while enjoying some of the more tourist friendly elements, such as the pier and the less friendly elements, like the seagulls with their endless appetites for people’s lunch, often before they were finished!
Students were all fantastic, but special mention has to go to Samuel G, Kevin C, Zoe S, Chase P and Brooke O for embodying the SMILE ethos in such fantastic manner.
A small group of Year 10 GCSE Level Sociology students went to the Holocaust Exhibition at the Imperial War Museum in London on 8th July.
As well as a session with one of the Museum’s educators, students were able to use interactive audio guides to give them extra information as they went round the newly refurbished and upgraded exhibition.
Thinking from a sociological perspective, students were able to explore how the Nazis tried to transform the socialisation of culture and emphasise the importance of race in areas where they gained power, through education and the mass media, as well as through changes in the law. ‘This is part of our determination to provide a range of enrichment activities through trips and welcoming visitors into our classroom!’, commented Mr Andy Lee, Head of RE and Sociology.
YEAR 11 PROM
The Year 11 took place on Friday 21st June, at The Great Danes Hotel. The venue was magnificently decorated to match the theme of the night, creating a fantastic atmosphere that set the tone for an unforgettable evening for our year 11 students.
Students arrived in style, with a variety of impressive transportation, including limousines, vintage cars, sports cars and tractors! Upon arrival, students were asked for the annual prom photo outside of the venue, before walking along the red carpet into the venue, to be greeted with mocktails. Once the students had found their seats, we started the evening with the awards ceremony. A special mention to our Prom King and Prom Queen – Abi Carter and James Norman. It was a wonderful way to start the evening, looking back at all their fantastic achievements and memories from the past five years. In addition, how they have all grown and come so far in such a short amount of time, Miss Edwards and I are incredibly proud of their accomplishments.
The photo booth was a popular spot, offering a range of props that allowed students and staff to capture fun and memorable moments. Photos were printed instantly for them to takeaway as a keepsake.
The Year 11 prom was a resounding success, with students, staff, and parents commenting on how amazing the night was. The atmosphere throughout the entire evening was brilliant, with students keeping the dancefloor busy until the very end. It was a night filled with laughter, dancing, and cherished memories, marking a perfect send-off for the year 11 students as they move on to the next chapter of their lives.
A huge thank you to Mr Dadson, Mrs Clubb and Miss Edwards for organising such a wonderful event. Their hard work and commitment ensured that the Year 11 Prom was a memorable event for all. Lastly, a massive thank you to the staff at The Great Danes Hotel for their brilliant hospitality throughout the evening.
We hope the Year 11 students had the most amazing evening and they can now go and enjoy their summer. We look forward to seeing them all again on results day.
Mr King
Cornwallis Academy’s Euro 2024 Extravaganza
Welcome to the Final edition of Mr Robinson’s Euro 2024 review.
Over the last 4 weeks, Cornwallis Academy and the rest of the nation have been watching in anticipation to see who would be crowned Europe’s best footballing country – we now know!
There have been lots to talk about during this tournament and not just my silly puns – we have seen World Records being broken with the youngest ever player and scorer plus the fastest ever goal scored by Albania, face masks, storms delaying matches, last minute winners and…England actually scoring 5 perfect penalties. We even had our very own Year 7 Football pundits live on BBC Radio Kent.
Unfortunately, Football did not come home on Sunday night despite the efforts of Gareth’s men. It was another disappointing and upsetting night for the nation as England lost 2 – 1 to Spain. Throughout the tournament, Spain have looked like they were the best team and their 86th minute goal saw them win this tournament for the 4th time. Well done to Spain and all of the England team for their valiant effort.
Well done to all of our tutors and students for their great support with whatever country they were following plus congratulations to Mrs Sperryn and 7SS, who were supporting Spain, on winning our first ever Cornwallis Academy’s Euro 2024 Extravaganza. They will receive their prizes in September (breakfast and sweets).
It has been a brilliant four weeks at Cornwallis Academy and the whole community have been involved. As well as the Extravaganza, we also had some extra fun with Fantasy Football teams (Mr McMahon winning the staff one with an impressive 406 points), two winners on our ‘Guess the Result’ with both successfully predicting that Georgia would let in the most number of goals and finally, eight different winners on our Sweepstake - Overall, it has been a engaging month supporting Euro 2024.
Until World Cup 2026 in Canada, Mexico and USA…‘Auf Wiedersehen’
Mr G Robinson
Dear Year 7 families,
I know as you read this, you will be contemplating how fast this year has gone; I feel exactly the same. It only seems like yesterday that I was welcoming your children to the Academy as new year 7 students, who were anxiously approaching a new chapter in their life. A year later and they have developed confidence and shown so many areas of potential.
Throughout this year there have been numerous academic achievements. Over half the year group accumulated more than 300 house points and the learning and dedication from the year group was evident in the end of year exam results.
This term has been extremely busy with students finishing their year 7 programmes of study, we welcomed outside speakers to their RE lessons where students had an interactive experience about prayer spaces. There have been many sporting activities and the trials for the year 8 scholarship programmes in Dance, Art and Football took place a few weeks ago. Congratulations to all those who were successfully selected. The school also got involved with the Euro 2024 football competition, all form groups were allocated a country to support. There will be a prize for the winning form group but as I write this we still do not know who will hold the trophy aloft, we can only hope it is England!
I am holding an assembly for all of year 7 this week to remind everyone of my high expectations. I understand that towards the end of the year students and staff are tired but I want to emphasise the importance of uniform, positive behaviour and kindness. During this assembly I will be awarding some students with a post card to bring home. They have gone the whole year without receiving any negative behaviour points which is an outstanding achievement. They have shown the Cornwallis SMILE every single day since starting the school and are a real credit to the Academy, to Year 7 and to me.
The final week of this term is enrichment week. Students are given the opportunity to attend visits, take part in school based activities and, for some, try out new activities that they have never done before. We also have sports day taking place in this last week, again a new experience for year 7, as our sports day is one to be rivalled!
I will be holding an assembly on the last day of term to award students who have had amazing attendance, those who have shown the Cornwallis SMILE and for those students who have made significant improvements. The decision of who to award prizes to, remains such a difficult choice. So many students in the year group are exemplary in their appearance, attitude to learning and their conduct around the Academy, so congratulations to all those who are making the right choices. Below are the students who were awarded this term.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the students on a really successful year 7. It has been nothing but a pleasure supporting and getting to know each and everyone in the 240 cohort. All your children have been a credit to you and supported me in my mission to make this year group the best the school has seen. I know many of us are excited for the summer holidays but there are some students and families who are anxious about this long period of time away from routine. If you need any support, then please do not hesitate to contact me. Please have a well deserved rest and I thoroughly look forward to seeing everyone again at the start of year 8.
Kind regards,
Mrs Clark-Keen, Head of Year 7

Dear Year 8 families,
In our final newsletter of the year, I would like to start off by thanking all Year 8 families for their continued support over this academic year. We are immensely proud of the year group and of how well they have progressed since the start of Year 7.
As we prepare for Year 9 in September, I wanted to inform you that there will be some slight changes to our tutor groups which is outlined below:
9ER – Mrs Rees (previously 8RW)
9CM – Mr Mortimer
9MS – Mrs Sangster (previously 8DS)
9RL – Mr Lee/Mrs Holmes
9NS – Miss Stafford
9RP – Mrs Petch/Mr Henry
9HV – Miss Vass/Mrs Andreev
9LM – Miss Malata
We have two more tutor groups which will work alongside the list above and they are a Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) tutor group which will take place twice a week with Mr Clapp, along with a Spanish and French Target tutor group too. Students will find out more about this when they return to school in September.
Our year zone for Year 9 will now also be at the front of the school. This will be for our morning lineups at 8:20am, break time and lunch time too. Students are aware of these changes as we have been using this new area over the last two weeks.
One very important event I would like to highlight to you in preparation for next year is our Year 9 Options evening which will take place during term 3. During the evening you and your child will need to weigh up which GCSE options subjects would be most suitable to study from Year 10. Support and guidance will be offered throughout and more information regarding this event will be sent to you closer to the time.
Finally, on behalf of myself, Mrs Judd and all of the form tutors we would like to wish you all a very relaxing summer break and we look forward to welcoming our Year 9 students back on Thursday 5th September 2024. Please do ensure that your child is fully prepared for the first day back by double checking that their uniform, equipment and pencil cases are all in good condition. If you have any issues with any of this please do get in touch and we will endeavour to support as much as we can. Hope you all have a fantastic summer!

Dear Year 9 families,
And just like that our Year 9 students have completed their third year of studies at Cornwallis Academy. The year has been full of firsts for our students, from them choosing their GCSE option subjects to partaking in workshops focusing on their wellbeing and future university prospects. As always, Ms Stephens-Clark and I have been incredibly proud of all their achievements and to have had the pleasure of supporting them as their year team. This week, students have enjoyed all the opportunities enrichment week has offered, continuing to demonstrate to Cornwallis SMILE whilst representing the school. On Thursday students fully embraced sports day and did themselves proud. To end the term, we celebrated the year’s achievements with a year group assembly. Key Reminders for September 2024:
Uniform
Please can I ask that you use time over the summer break to refresh yourselves with the full school uniform policy, found on the school website. Key reminders include the requirement of formal black shoes (no Kickers style shoes or boots), knee length pleated skirts, formal black trousers and limited makeup (including but not limited to the banning of false nails and eyelashes). Daily uniform checks will continue to take place, in school, by your child’s Form Tutor every morning. Tutors may contact you should your child not come to school fully prepared for their learning and we ask for your support if there are any issues.
Equipment requirements
As students are commencing their GCSE studies, it is vital now more than ever that they attend school every day with a school bag and a fully stocked pencil case. Below is a reminder of the required equipment:
2 black pens (one to write with and spare)
A set of different coloured pens
Pencil
Sharpener
Eraser
Ruler
Protractor
Compass
A scientific calculator (Ideally a Casio fx-83GTX or Casio fx-85GTX)
Once again if there are any financial issues with purchasing any school items then please do not hesitate to contact me as we may be able to support.
Attendance
Excellent punctuality and attendance is such an important aspect of your child’s school life. Please ensure that your child attends school every day and remind them of the importance of being on time for both school and their lessons.
Year 9 Team - Final message
We hope you all have an amazing summer break and take lots of time to relax and refresh, ready to embark on your GCSE studies in September. Please take care of yourselves and stay safe.
I will look forward to welcoming you all back in September!

Duke Of Edinburgh Awards Scheme (Silver)
Congratulations to Year 10 students who participated in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and undertook their Practice Expedition, which took place in Kingsdown (Dover/Deal), and successfully passed their Qualifying Expedition two weeks later.
They took part in 3 days of training and practice activities ranging from first-aid, outdoor cooking to map reading and navigating
before their assessment weekend in late May and were pictured enjoying the end point at Kearsney Abbey.
Thank you to Mr Clapp and his excellent team for running the expeditions.
Work Experience
Miss Perry and I have enjoyed visiting our Year 10 students on their work experience placements, which range from schools to stables, and offices to construction sites. It's been fantastic to see them in different settings, acquiring a range of different skills. It will be an invaluable experience for all our students.
Have a lovely summer holiday!
This has been a hugely successful academic year for so many of our students, and they have coped very well with the demands of studying for their GCSE courses. On behalf of the Year team, we wish all our year group a restful summer with family and friends, and we look forward to seeing all students back at Cornwallis on Thursday 5th September.
From Mr Spurling and Miss Perry.
Dear parents/carers,
As we end the academic year and our fifth with this wonderful cohort, we can reflect on the incredible growth and progress the students have made at Cornwallis Academy. Across the five years, but particular year 11, we have experienced unbelievable achievements and resilience to overcome challenges. We are incredibly proud of their attitude, dedication and work ethic.
We were exceptionally proud of how students approached their GCSEs. They all put in a tremendous amount of effort and will all get the outcomes that their efforts deserve. I would also like to thank you for your support during such a crucial time. We look forward to welcoming the students back on Thursday 22nd August for the GCSE Results Day. On the day, we will have members of our Senior Leadership Team, as well as our Director of Sixth Form, to speak with students and their families after they have opened their results. This is a fantastic opportunity to confirm next steps or discuss potential options.
The prom night was hugely successful, and everyone had such a wonderful time. It was the perfect way to end their journey with us. I must say, we were all incredibly impressed with the transport students arrived in. The students danced and laughed throughout the entire evening, with the venue commenting that it was one of the best proms they have ever had. A special mention to our Prom King and Prom Queen – Abi Carter and James Norman.

Miss Edwards – Year 11 SSM – gedwards@cornwallisacademy.com
Many of us including the students have commented on how quickly this year seems to have passed. As always, it's been a busy year with so many events taking place. It does feel like only a very short time since I welcomed the students back in September.
In the last ten months, we've visited universities, careers fairs both here and at Mote Park, held our second Colour Run, had fun days out at Bluewater and more recently, Thorpe Park, held our year 13 leavers' prom at the Weald of Kent Golf Club in between of course, the business of education. Our vision for the sixth form here remains focused on academia and enabling our students to be the best they can be but also to ensure that school is an environment they want to be in and enjoy coming to.
I have enjoyed getting to know the year 12 students and we welcomed a record number of students from other schools which I feel is a real testament to what we do here. Our Senior Student Team is made up of not only Cornwallis students but also students who have joined us from other schools in Maidstone this year.
The new cohort settled well in to their post 16 studies with the returning year 13s prepared and ready to embrace their final year of study with us.
Around half of the year 13 cohort applied to university for a broad range of courses including mechanical engineering, creative writing, medicine, physics with astronomy, forensic science and architecture. For those of you that are new to the university process, your child will be able to log into their UCAS account at 8am on results day to check if they have secured their first choice places. Results will be available as per the above.
Our current year 12 students are now on their work experience placements and as with the university applications, a wide range of employers and organisations have offered our students a life as a working adult. Suffice to say, some will come away with the realisation that school may well be much easier!
Academically and pastorally, the students have come a long way. Some face the most challenging circumstances but continue to access their education. I very much look forward to celebrating the successes and achievements of our students at are annual Awards Evening Ceremony early in the new school year.
As the year draws to a close, I would like to share with you some key dates for your diaries. In early September we will hold our annual information evening for parents and students which is an opportunity for me to share with you how your child's schooling will differ from lower school. The second half of this evening is given over to year 13 parents and covers the Student Finance application process for those considering university. This will take place during the second week of the new term but I will write to you with more detailed information when we return.
I am also pleased to share with you the return of RAG (raise and give) week which will take place in the spring. This was traditionally something that just the sixth form students arranged and was a fantastic way to raise money for our charitable causes.
I wish you all a restful Summer.
Mrs J Woollett, Head of Key Stage 5
