Dear parents/carers,
It has been another busy term with excellent teaching and learning taking place. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have been working hard to prepare for the start of their summer examinations, commencing next term. The rest of the year groups have also been preparing for their end of year assessments.
I hope you enjoy reading our end of term newsletter, including the individual year group sections - you’ll see there’s a great deal to be proud of.
As a school, we have been busy preparing for lots of exciting events due to take place over the coming months - such as enrichment week, the colour run, year 10 and 12 work experience, sports day, the Year 11 prom, the Year 13 prom and our 65th anniversary celebrations!
I wish you and your family a relaxing Easter break and look forward to welcoming students back to school on Monday 15th April.

Maidstone United’s recent success has been well documented on a national level, owing to the team’s extraordinary FA Cup exploits. The partnership, and our scholars in particular, seemed to become regular television, newspaper and radio features, which of course, is great coverage for Cornwallis Academy, and our exclusive links with Maidstone United.
It is however, our Maidstone United U19 Academy side who have made history of their own by reaching the Academies U19 National cup final, to be played at the home of England football: St George’s Park. Enormous congratulations to Billy, Brad, Ben, Max and all the coaches at MUFC, and of course to all the players in their 1st team squad. Special mention to year 11s Mark Boruk and Reuben Jones, who have regularly been drafted into the first team, and we hope will make an appearance at St George’s on May 1st.
Head of Scholarships, Mr Robinson, is in the process of arranging for students to make the journey to support the team, so keep an eye out for correspondence from him. We will offer places to our scholarship students first if the trip is to go ahead.
YOUNG WRITERS' POETRY COMPETITION
Cornwallis Academy, entered the Young Writers' poetry competition titled ‘This is me’. Students carefully crafted poems about themselves and submitted them to the panel. Over 90 of our students were selected to have their work published in the book, which is an amazing achievement for both them and the school.
We are incredibly proud of them all, and look forward to entering further writing competitions.
On Thursday 7th March, Cornwallis Academy celebrated World Book Day. Students were able to celebrate this occasion by participating in a variety of enjoyable activities.
The morning was spent hosting our Dicken’s inspired ‘Tea with a Twist’ reading marathon, where KS3 students were able to enjoy hot chocolate, cakes and biscuits, whilst reading a selection of Charles Dickens novels and extracts. All students were invited to participate in creating their own cupcakes, inspired by their favourite author and were able to purchase doughnuts and cakes throughout the school day.
As always, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all at Cornwallis Academy, and we have successfully promoted a further love of reading, whilst also prompting discussion of the English Literature amongst our students.
Term 5 has seen some excellent learning taking place. Students in RE have worked hard on their projects, with several students receiving a letter from Mrs McMahon commending their efforts. In History, year 7 students have made models of Mott and Bailey Castles. There were many exceptional examples and the winners can be found in the Class Champions document. Well done to all that took part! Key Stage 5 Computing students have also just received their grades for their non-examinable component; all made progress and Luke McPherson received a Distinction.
Year 11 have been partaking in a number of coursework days, walking-talking-mocks and final mock exams. These have proven invaluable to students and have set them on the right path for their final full term at Cornwallis.
Further information on this terms class champions can be found at: www.cornwallisacademy.com/news-events/classroom-champions/
Fusion Café and YMCA
Students in KS4 have successfully completed their 8-week cookery course at The Fusion Café in Park Wood. Not only have they learned essential skills, but they have also completed a level 1 qualification too. Students received a certificate and a set of kitchen utensils for their efforts. The staff at Fusion Café have been hugely impressed with the conduct and dedication of the students; so much so that they have been invited back to help cater for their volunteer awards in the summer! Well done to: TJ H, Faith E, Angel B, Brady C, Gracie O, Kayla C, Violet C and George B!
This term, we have partnered with The YMCA in Loose to begin a KS3 sports programme. Students partake in a different sport each week and then have dinner in the café afterwards. So far, students have played a furious game of handball and were able to play football in the sun on their 3G pitch. The excitement of roller skating next week is palpable!
We look forward to continuing our community partnerships and offering our students fantastic opportunities.
YEAR 6 TRANSITION DAY
Over 180 eager faces filled the halls of Cornwallis Academy, marking an unforgettable transition day for our incoming Year 7 students. As part of our comprehensive transition program, designed to ensure students are not only prepared but also excited and confident to embark on their secondary school journey, the day was packed with activities tailored to ignite curiosity and camaraderie.
The students eagerly participated in a variety of workshops covering Science, Mathematics, and English. These workshops offered engaging experiences, from experimenting with potions to tackling mathematical puzzles and enjoying literary adventures.
Adding to the day's enjoyment was an inflatable obstacle course, which provided fun and laughter while strengthening bonds between students as they tackled the challenges together.
Throughout it all, the Year 6 students exemplified remarkable enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of Cornwallis Academy. Every challenge was met with determination, every task embraced with a sense of adventure. By the end of the day, not only had they gained valuable insights into what lies ahead but they had also forged new friendships.
For some, the day held an extra dimension of opportunity as over ninety students chose to extend their experience by participating in scholarship trials/auditions. These students demonstrated not only their skills but also their ambition and dedication.
To all who joined us for this remarkable day, we look forward to welcoming each and every one of you to the Cornwallis Academy family.
LANGUAGES CONFERENCE
The Modern Foreign Languages Department selected 15 of our year 9 students to attend the Language Conference at Tonbridge School. Our students had the opportunity to listen and network with amazing speakers who have all used Languages extensively within their careers. It was a very inspirational day, which helped our students to make informed decisions about their future. This conference was an event organised as part of our collaboration with Dartford Grammar School for the Wells Language Hub. We look forward to continuing our partnership to offer our students valuable Languages opportunities and events.
Cornwallis’ Careers Fair 2024
On 20th March we held our biennial Careers Fair. It was a busy and fantastic day which students, teachers and providers all enjoyed, and many interesting conversations were had! All year groups had the opportunity to visit the fair and speak to representatives from a wide variety of businesses, key services and further education institutions, these included; the Army, RAF, Kent Police, McDonalds, Maidstone United Football Club, NHS, Hadlow, Mid-Kent and North Kent Colleges as well as the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University. We were also lucky enough to have local businesses attend too, such as GENCO, Pennie’s Nursery, Bidfood, Thakeham and RM to name just a few. It was a brilliant day and students were able to access valuable information about the world of work and training, career paths they maybe had never considered and which courses in higher education could lead on to their dream jobs!
Year 7 have been totally amazing again this term, showing all areas of our school SMILE ethos. Students have been successful in lessons and their learning, this is demonstrated through the enormous number of EPraise house points students have been receiving. Some of our students have reached Cornwallis club, 200+ points, and there are a few in the year group who have already achieved a gold ambassador award, 300+ points. Really well done to those students.
Last week, students were lucky enough to spend time at our school careers fair. We had a range of companies in attendance and the year 7 cohort were confidently asking questions and finding out about the different local businesses. I was very proud of how they all conducted themselves and they showed such a mature interest with the adults they spoke to.
This term we have had some charity and national events. Comic Relief saw the children coming to school in their own clothes for the day, thank you to those who paid the £1 contribution, this goes to a good cause and helps others who are in need. Students participated in World Book Day and there were many students who took part in a readathon. It is so important that students have access to reading material and take part in reading for pleasure. This is built into the English Curriculum and they have allocated lessons for reading. Please ensure that your child brings something to read with them on a daily basis. If there are no suitable books at home, we have the school library where books can be borrowed.
I want to publicly say thank you to a number of students that came to school on Saturday 16th March to support with our year 6 transition morning. This time last year, your children were making the daunting transition from primary school to secondary school. We welcomed our new year 6 students to the school and 12 of our year group were kind and supportive; they offered help to those who were feeling a little vulnerable. Thank you you were all a credit to the school.

We sent out an email earlier this term to gauge interest in your child taking part in ‘Bike-ability’. We have discussed road safety at school and I know many of your children come to school on a bicycle. I believe that some children completed this course at Primary School but some schools did not offer the course. Please look back at the email sent to you and register your interest before the 28th March if your child would like to participate.
Thank you for signing up to the enrichment activities. These will take place at the end of year 7, before the summer term. We are in the process of organising the children into the different events. More information will follow but this is an exciting opportunity for year 7 to participate in new and exciting activities.
We also have many things taking place next term. Year 7 will be doing end of year tests, week beginning 29th April. These tests are completed in lesson and help teachers to check on student progress and areas for development. Please reassure your children there is nothing to worry about. You will receive an end of year report following the tests, please do contact us if there are queries about your child’s grades and scores as I know these have a different format from primary school. We also have the first year 7 parents' evening on Thursday 23rd May. The appointments are in person and we will be providing information about how to book these closer to the time. Please keep this date free so that we can meet with you and your child and give them relevant information to help them progress in their learning.
Finally, I want to say how proud I am of the year group. I have worked tirelessly to help them settle into the school, and they are showing such a positive and mature attitude in all elements of their school life. The year is going so fast and we only have 13 weeks left of year 7. I hope you all have a relaxed and restful break ready for the start of term 5. We look forward to seeing you all at parents' evening in May and welcoming the children back on Monday 15th April.
Best Wishes
Mrs Clark-Keen
Dear Year 8 families,
I would like to start off by thanking you all for your attendance and support in this week’s Year 8 Parents’ Evening. These evenings are truly vital, as they provide students with feedback on their current progress and also target areas to focus on for the future. I do hope you found the evening valuable and if anyone was unable to make the parents’ evening, please feel free to make contact with us and we will ensure that feedback is obtained regarding your child's progress.
On reflection of this term, I have been very impressed with how well the year group have demonstrated their SMILE ethos. This has been very noticable when I have conducted my learning walks of lessons and seeing how enthusiastic the students are in their learning environments. As we prepare for term 5, please do encourage your children to continue to work hard as when they return after easter they will be conducting their End of Year Examinations. These examinations will serve as a benchmark of how much progress the students have made within their subjects over the course of the academic year. This will also enable teachers to identify gaps in their knowledge to then support the students understanding further as they progress into Year 9. More details regarding the Year 8 end of year examinations, including a timetable, will follow at the start of term 5.
Finally, I would like to wish you all a nice relaxing easter break with your families, and we look forward to welcoming all students back on Monday 15th April 2024.

Final note
Wishing you all a very happy, safe, and restful half term break!
This has been a hugely productive term for so many of our students, who continue to cope very well with the demands of studying for their various GCSE courses. Several Year 10s have recently completed GCSE practical examinations, as well as assessments for Vocational subjects including Business Studies, which count towards their final grade. We have been very impressed with the resilience and maturity demonstrated by these students as the year has progressed.
The Year 10s were very proactive during the Careers Fair (Wednesday 20th). They displayed a really mature attitude when talking to a range of professionals from diverse fields including the police force, technology firms and McDonalds. In the days that have followed, several students have already begun to delve deeper into looking at which courses or apprenticeships they wish to pursue when they reach 16.
On a similar note, the Year 10s have already been very proactive in arranging for themselves a Work Experience placement in the final week of Term 6. During those 5 days, students can gain a real taste for what life will be like in the world of work, in diverse settings which can range from building sites, hotels and primary schools. We're sure that they will benefit hugely from such a fantastic opportunity.
After Easter, students will begin preparing for their Year 10 mock examinations which commence in June. On behalf of the Year team, we wish all our students and their families a very happy and restful Easter, and we look forward to seeing all students back at Cornwallis on Monday April 15th.
From Mr Spurling and Miss Perry.

Dear parents/carers,
Year 11 have had another fantastic term, with more excellent achievements and valuable learning experiences. With just over three school weeks remaining until the GCSE series, the students have impressed us with their commitment and dedication to their students.
PPE Series
The cohort completed another set of PPE assessments, this time focusing on English, Maths and Science. Behaviour and conduct was exceptional, with the year group being highly praised from members of staff and our Senior Leadership Team. This is fantastic preparation for when the GCSE series begins, with student conduct needing to be perfect from the very start. Furthermore, this is an opportunity for students to reflect on their academic performances, identifying areas they can develop to further enhance their progress and grades.
Please can I ask for your support in ensuring your son/daughter is attending school with full equipment and stationery. It is a requirement for all students to be fully equipped for school to support them in their lesson. In addition, it is essential all students bring full stationery, including a calculator, to their exams. Your support with this matter would be greatly appreciated.
Parents Evening
A reminder that our next Parents' Evening is taking place on Thursday 18th April. We look forward to seeing you there in what a final opportunity for you will be to receive feedback from members of staff prior to the GCSEs. The feedback from teachers will hopefully give your son/daughter the encouragement to act on areas for development, enhancing their academic prospects.
Careers Fair
Year 11 students participated in our bi-annual Careers Fair. This was an excellent opportunity for students to explore various career options, learn about different industries, and gather information about potential future pathways. After speaking to some of our students at the event, it is clear that these have positive implications on students selected their next steps at post-16.
Year Group Photos
Our year group photo will take place on Thursday 18th April, during period 5. Students must ensure that they attend school in full school uniform. Therefore, please can I ask for you to resolve any uniform matters during the half term.

This term has been very busy with a large number of events.
Our year 13 students attended the Mote Park Apprenticeship Fair once again this year. The event which is organised by Kent's MPs grows year on year and gives the students a great opportunity to access a wide range of employers and providers from South East Eater and Amazon to name but two.
We followed this up with our biennial careers fair last week and I was delighted to see how engaged our students were with the organisations that attended. It was also the perfect opportunity for the year 12s to explore work experience opportunities.
This leads me to send a gentle reminder to our year 12 families that students are asked to self place a five day work experience placement. Please use any connections you have and if your child has a weekend job they are welcome to undertake a placement with their employer on the proviso that they are doing something different to their current role.
Academically, I know that a number of deadlines have passed this week for not only year 13 students but also the year 12s. I do not underestimate the pressure that the students can feel at this time of the year and they are to be congratulated for their hard work and commitment.
Our year 13 Extended Project Qualification students presented their findings having put in over 90 hours of research into topics such as philosophical theories, the influence of social media, the role of the monarchy and creation theories. The presentations that I was privileged to watch were fantastic and the students should be extremely proud of their hard work.
Next term there are a number of key events for your diaries. The year 12 visit to University of Kent at Canterbury takes place on Wednesday 24th April. All year 12 students are required to attend. A letter if not already, will be sent to you this week with full details.
Our next reward trip also takes place next term and this time we are going to Thorpe Park and we have asked staff to nominate year 12 students for showing true Cornwallis spirit. As before, I expect to be inundated with nominations and names will be pulled from a hat.
Our year 13 group photo will be taken on Thursday 18th April and will be available to purchase through Parent Pay.
Final date for your diaries, the year 13 Prom takes place on Friday 3rd May at the Weald of Kent Golf Club. Deposit payments should have been paid by now but we are still accepting requests for tickets.
Your child has been given their personalised exam timetable for the forthcoming Summer exam season. A small number of year 12 students have been entered for AS exams. If your child has any queries or questions about their exams, please ask them to speak to Mrs Wooding, Exams Officer.
Finally, I am delighted to announce that we have appointed our Senior Student Team for the next academic year.
We received a record number of fifteen applications from students that have been with us since year seven but also from our sister school, New Line Learning and students that have joined us from other schools in the area. After a rigorous selection process which included presenting to the current year eleven cohort as well as an interview with myself, Mrs McMahon and Mrs Robinson we have appointed Thomas Hood and Aston Huggins as Head Boy and Deputy Head Boy respectively and Hannah Lucas and Lucy Haigh Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl respectively. Emma Hargrave and Jacob White have been appointed Charity Ambassadors.
I am looking forward to working closely with the team next year and will be sharing more about forthcoming events in due course.
Students of the week - Freya Latter and Jasmine Latter
May I end by taking this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and I wish you all a peaceful and restful break.
Mrs J Woollett, Head of Key Stage 5
