bozo /bō′zō/
A fellow; a guy.
A dunce; a fool.
A stupid or foolish person.
Things I haven't written, and strongly recommend.
"The Naval Academy Canceled My Lecture on Wisdom" by Ryan Holiday (4/19/2025, NYTimes)
"I Am Very Real; Kurt Vonnegut's Letter to Drake High School" (11/16/1973, HuffPost)
"Child's Play" by Sam Kriss (2/18/2026, Harper's)
My prides and joys.
"The Home Front", genesis, Spring 2021 (Best of Fiction for this issue)
"Combat Sport", Manuscripts, 2021-22; genesis, Fall 2022
"There Were 87 Work-Related Real Estate Deaths in 2019", genesis, Fall 2021
"A Story About Pensions", genesis, Spring 2022
Works that are truly finished, that I have no plans of further revising or rewriting. Loosely organized.
XIV.
From, With Anger - A letter, of sorts. A poem. Alternate titles include "Devil of Small Death and the Codeine Scene" and "King of Hearts".
XIII.
Combat Sport - A poem analogizing an orchestra with the movements of a fencing bout.
XII.
Unnamed Gore #1 - Written after I had been out of practice for a while, I was briefly only able to write gore. I have no interest in writing more or finding a better title.
There Were 87 Work-Related Real Estate Deaths in 2019 - A satirical story suggesting a possible explanation for at least one of the work-related real estate deaths in 2019.
XI.
Back from La Jolla - A short, simple poem about drowning.
Living by the Sword - A flash fiction describing the thoughts of a nuclear scientist on his commute home.
Heart of Ohio (winner of the Rebecca Pitts Poetry Prize & Eric Sharp Gateway Poetry Award) - About my poem, the judge wrote, "“Heart of Ohio” is a humorous, sarcastic, and voice-driven poem that is both political and advertorial. It reads like a carnival barker shouting about “mammoth-bone calendars” at passing cars full of people who couldn’t care less. The poem is a fun and snarky take on post-industrial America with a punchy and conclusive ending: the promise of a closeout sale."
X.
Anrique - My longest story to date, and one I would actually like to write a new version of at some point. Two witches pick up a dead man as they travel across the Arizona desert.
VII.
The Home Front (Best of Fiction, genesis, Spring 2021) - "The Home Front" is a story about a few of the many things one sees at an antique store but can't imagine anyone at any time ever wanting or making.
VI.
A Story About Pensions - A satirizing take on the corporate world.
Other.
Prayer of the Unrequited Lover - A poem about longing that one might say in prayer.
The Influencers 1 & 2 - A script about five shallow influencers living in Los Angeles and how they react when one of them goes mainstream, and its sequel.
What I Did Over Summer Vacation - An early, but complete, version of "Eskimo Hell". I dislike this version, and consider it separate from the story I'd truly like to write.
Poems for a Lover You Can't Have - The complete set from which "Prayer of the Unrequited Lover" was derived. Written for and about someone who now hates me.
Podunk: Postcard from 'The Only Lizton in the World' - A postcard is a flash fiction about a place; this is one for Lizton.
Titles for which stories are currently being written. I try to provide a synopsis of each.
Lock & Key - Two scientists stand at the precipice of a new universe, wondering what comes next.
500 - A play sensationalizing some of the earliest days of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, featuring mobsters, cats, and the loss of innocence.
The Left-Handed Devil of Good Fortune - What would a crossroads devil want from you, if not your soul?
Service Economy - Virtual reality becomes the cubicles of tomorrow in a cyberpunk horror.
Touring Gomorrah - A murderer ashamed of what he's done tries to reconcile his actions as he flees.
The Desilieres - A series of shorts about a French expat living on an Antarctic island, and the other people there.
Room 471 - When the world shrinks to a habitable bubble over a small, South Dakotan town, only one man is willing to ask the question: why them?
Spills - Suburbia becomes a desolate wasteland after a climate apocalypse.
Eskimo Hell - A group of boy scouts become stranded in the Canadian wilderness after the world plunges into a sudden ice age.
And Everything Else - A series of shorts about a chaotic friend and his influence.
Inventory of a Friendship - A poem/list denoting gifts given and received of a friendship since passed.
Jabberwocky - An adaptation of the Lewis Carroll poem of the same name into a longer children's story.
Titles that are unlikely to ever be written, for one reason or another.
Sword of Solomon - A spy thriller depicting an alternate history where Anne Frank became a Nazi hunter.
Enemy Agenda - The story that made me start writing, and thus, it will never be good enough to even call started.
