A rise in urbanization decreases the amount of natural environment humans come in contact with on a daily basis. This increase results in exposure to auditory disturbances that disrupt and affect concentration by disallowing mental processes the opportunity to restore. To counteract this negative effect, research in this area has evaluated the significance of creating as natural an environment as possible. Pink noise is often utilized to mimic a natural soundscape. This study applied pink noise during a high focus demand period in a fourth-grade classroom to manipulate the normal classroom soundscape. Results show positive effects for utilizing pink noise to increase student concentration.
