Durham University and Newcastle University are working together in partnership to support the delivery of Initial Teacher Training (ITT) in the North East of England, opening up exciting opportunities for the future training of teachers in the region.
In this programme, you will follow an Initial Teacher Training (ITT) Curriculum that has been accredited by the Department for Education. The programme is carefully designed to ensure that you receive your minimum entitlement of the ITTECF Framework, embedded in an enhanced curriculum, supported by a range of experts, in university and in schools.
Our carefully designed programme is designed to:
- build student teachers’ competence in the knowledge and skills necessary to enter the teaching profession,
- help student teachers develop effective working relationships with pupils, students, parents and colleagues,
- support student teachers in becoming reflective and resilient teachers who help raise aspiration and achievement of young people,
- set the foundations for a long and successful career in teaching.
To enable this, the programme is organised across 4 phases, carefully sequencing and building your trainee-teacher knowledge and practice development from novice to a competent and proficient practitioner.
During each of these phases you will build on your learning and apply knowledge gained in university-based sessions within real classroom settings to refine practice through observation, experience and reflective dialogue.
At each curriculum phase, the design of the programme, in keeping with our vision, is explicitly linked to five strands.
Strand One Establishing an appropriate environment for learning: High Expectations and Managing Behaviour (TS1 and TS7)
Strand Two Supporting pupils to learn effectively: How Pupils Learn, Classroom Practice and Adaptive Teaching (TS2, TS4, TS5)
Strand Three Understanding what to teach: Subject and curriculum knowledge (TS3)
Strand Four Monitoring the learning and progress of pupils: Assessment (TS6)
Strand Five Building a professional identity: Professional behaviours (TS8 and PPC)
You will work alongside academic specialists and expert school practitioners to support the development of your understanding and knowledge of primary pedagogies and the curriculum.
The Primary National Curriculum subjects, key pedagogical themes, ITaPs and TLDs will be taught throughout all modules.
Each module will be assessed. Click here to find out more: Assessment & QTS
Aims: The national curriculum provides pupils with an introduction to the essential knowledge that they need to be educated citizens. It introduces pupils to the best that has been thought and said; and helps engender an appreciation of human creativity and achievement. The national curriculum is just one element in the education of every child. There is time and space in the school day and in each week, term and year to range beyond the national curriculum specifications. The national curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge around which teachers can develop exciting and stimulating lessons to promote the development of pupils’ knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the wider school curriculum.
