“Nothing really matters, anyone could see. Nothing really matters to me.” - Freddie Mercury
A prolog
A hurried man sprints through an office, looking at his watch as it glares back at him while ticking forward. He was late probably up late working on his passion projects. This man was one named Dr. Chroner; a scientist working at the Daedalus Robotics Corporation. Passing by the whirring Hoplites as he ran, each of them turned their heads to follow him with their piercing red hot stares. He was just about to finish the project he and his team had been slaving away on for the past few months. She was almost complete.
“Doctor. You are late. Would it kill you to be on time for once.” a familiarly annoyed voice called out to him.
“I'll arrange the funeral, Icarus, but we don’t have time to bicker now.” He retorted, running into the test chamber. It was time for his hard work to pay off. The room was dark and the low buzz of electricity was the only sound aside from his footsteps, in the middle of the room was the forefront of robotic technology. “So, you ready? If of course you brought, the er.. Y’know.”
Icarus shook his head, laughing a little bit. “Of course I did.” opening up the sleek shining suit case placing the heart and half a brain on the table to the side. “You really think I would forget it? How stupid do you think I am doctor..”
“You know that isn't what I meant Ic, come on let's get working on this.” putting on his gloves with a snap, he was ready to perform the delicate procedure.
Something happened that day, against all odds of nature and fate. Life was brought back from the grasp of death. Placed into a body of machine and wires. Granted the greatest curse of all. Immortality.
Static, the buzz of electricity and the harsh light of a fluorescent bulb. She looked around the room, it was small and somewhat dingy looking like some sort of cell. A voice chimed in her ear in a sarcastic and dry voice. “Early riser I see. I've seen dial tones faster than you.”
She had no idea what was going on, aside from that she was probably crazy. Deciding to humor herself she decided to speak out. “Er.. who are you? And where.. Am I?” she couldn't remember much of anything before when she first woke.
To her surprise the voice responded “Your brain must have been nicked in the transplant. I am S.U.E and you were dead.” the voice spoke with somewhat of a chuckle in her voice as if it was mocking her.
It took Caroline a moment to process what was being said. “Scuse me what? You can't
just drop that on me like it's something normal! Where the hell are we anyways I can’t remember anything since before.. Well anything.” She sat there not quite understanding the situation, where was this place, what was she doing there, and who was she in the first place?
“Do you think I'm some sort of exposition bot. I am about as in the dark as you. But not long ago you were a brain and heart in a jar. Quite pathetic looking.” S.U.E lifted Carolines left arm up to their chin. “Are you aware of your new body? Looks like being made of steel made you lose a few pounds. Haha.” the voice mocked
Before Caroline could respond the door to the cell opened, as a man in a white coat walked in. “Pardon me you two, I am not sure you know but I’m Dr. Chroner and I'm sorry for creating you. I know you have no reason to trust me but I need you to come with me. I'll explain a few things along the way, atleast to the point I know.”
“I.. suppose there isn't much else I can do. Stuck in a cell between trusting a stranger or sitting around and doing nothing hrrg.. I don’t know.” Caroline sat there bewildered.
“We don’t have forever and you control most of our body. Make a decision already.” S.U.E complained, just wanting to get away from this cold echoey prison.
After a little more thinking Caroline stood up shakily and nodded her head “Alright I'll.. Come along. Long as you’ll tell me what the hell is going on here. Alright?”
Over the long walk the doctor told them what he knew to the two of them. Given it was less then he would have wanted to tell. He explained to Caroline what he had done; bringing her back from the dead and placing her into the shell. Along with how things have changed from her time to some degree. As they were doing this she couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched. It felt like the walls had eyes, but she attempted to ignore it.
“Here we are, you can stay in the back room, it's not super comfortable but it will keep you hidden from them.” The doctor stated ominously before walking back into his workshop.
“What's he mean by that?” Caroline started nervously looking around the room, her paranoid feeling returning.
“Clearly he didn’t take us with permission. Likely he means they will be looking. Are you that dull?” S.U.E laughed to herself covering their mouth with their left hand.
“Hey! Stop moving my limbs around like that. It feels really strange. What's your problem anyways? I never did anything to you.'' The snarky comments from S.U.E wasn’t making this insane situation any better. ‘Back from the dead? Robot body? What did it all mean and why?’ she thought. What the future holds is uncertain but the feeling in her non-existent gut says something horrible is about to happen.
