I provide each customer with pamphlet containing information on how to care for, clean, and season their cast iron cookware. I wanted to provide some basic tips here. If you're interested in seeing the pamphlet, I would be happy to email you a copy. You can contact me at the email listed below.
Cast Iron Chris's Basic Tips for Care, Cleaning, and Seasoning
Tips for Care
Wipe down your cast iron after use
Keep your cast iron dry
If you notice the seasoning dulling, wipe down with a small amount of oil - just a couple of drops!
The more you use it, the more seasoned it will get!
Tips for Cleaning
It's OK to use soap!
You may have heard that you shouldn't use soap on cast iron. This was true back when soap had lye in it. Modern dish soaps do not and they won't strip the finish.
Use a sponge that is safe for non-stick surfaces and scrub down the cookware when needed.
Thoroughly dry your cookware after cleaning.
Once dry, add a couple of drops of oil to the cookware and wipe down as if you are polishing it. If you notice you need more oil, just add a couple of drops more and repeat the process.
Tips for Seasoning
If you notice that the seasoning has dulled and you'd like to bring it back to life, add a couple of drops of oil and wipe all surfaces of the cookware. Add more oil in dry spots, but only a little and wipe down well.
Once you've got your cookware oiled down, heat your oven to 500. Once at temp, put your cookware in the oven. Leave in the oven for one hour.
After the hour has elapsed, turn the oven off and let your cookware cool in the oven. I usually do this overnight to make sure the oil is baked in and the cookware is room temp before handling.
Repeat this process if needed. In most cases, 1-2 bakes in the oven will fully season your cookware, but you can do more if you like or if you think you need it is needed.
After this, the cookware is ready to use!
