I lived in my Little Tikes Kitchen Set. My finest creations were mixed up from rice and water, which would magically turn into beautiful delectable plastic foods. From the time I was able to hold a spoon I have helped out in my family’s kitchen and grew to appreciate food as an art that brings people together.
I have been lucky enough to be surrounded by healthy food and home-cooked meals my entire life. My Grandfather was a baker, my Grandmother cooked Italian feasts every weekend, and my Mom-mom baked delectable desserts for holidays and hosted incredible parties with beautiful food. Thankfully, my parents allowed me at a very young age to help cook in our home.
During high school, I attended Middle Bucks Institute of Technology for Culinary Arts and learned various food techniques I still use today. However, I quickly realized that I did not want to become a chef after working long hours in a country club kitchen and making a wedding cake (breaking a KitchenAid Mixer in the process from too many batches.) My inspirational culinary arts teachers had me observe in Family & Consumer Sciences classrooms and I instantly knew exactly what I wanted to do with my future: teach students how to cook.
I love motivating my students to cook and become global citizens as my teachers have taught me. It was heartbreaking that prior to taking my class some of my school students barely knew how to hold a spoon or turn on a stove.
Learning how to cook is an imperative life skill. I strive to teach cooking and baking skills to my family, students, and community so they can pass on the techniques to their future generations.
