Published October, 2026A panel discussion on child literacy and recognition of the late state senator, Stanley Russ, will highlight the Conway Kiwanis Bookcase Project annual banquet on Oct. 29.
The banquet will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. at Bob and Betty Courtway Middle School, 1200 Bob Courtway Drive, Conway. Supper and entertainment will be provided, the latter by Retro AM, songsters who have performed together in central Arkansas under other band names for years.
Among the issues expected to be discussed by the panel are the barriers that reading educators face and the role of home life in promoting child literacy. Members of the panel will be:
Hallie Leicht, a Title I interventionist specializing in reading for the Conway Public School District since August 2010.
Nancy Robinson Lott, a volunteer for the Little Rock Public School District who was named Tutor of the Year in 2026 by ARKids Read. This community-based nonprofit offers programs to ensure all students read proficiently by the end of third grade.
John McGraw, regional director, Faulkner-Van Buren Regional Library System.
Russ, who died in January 2017 at age 86, was a state senator who represented the district that included Conway from 1975-2001. His legislation included support of public, private and higher education. Russ became involved in the Conway Bookcase Project shortly after the child literacy initiative was founded in 2005.
Net proceeds of the banquet supplement funding for construction of 50 premium bookcases annually. Since the founding of the Bookcase Project, 1,100 personalized bookcases and starter sets of books have been awarded to preschoolers enrolled in Head Start in Faulkner and contiguous counties.
The bookcases are built by the Nabholz Construction Corporation mill shop in Conway. In 2024, Centennial Bank, Conway Corp and Virco Mfg. Corporation joined Nabholz as “sustaining partners” of the project.
Seats at the banquet are $25.00. A sponsor’s table of eight seats, for $250.00, includes benefits such as reserved seating and recognition via social media and at the banquet.
