Teaching on the Move: Simple Strategies to Get Students Active Indoors & Outdoors
Presenter: Mae Cameron
Session Description:
Classrooms are not confined to four walls—and neither are students’ learning needs. This 90-minute outdoor session is designed for K–12 educators interested in incorporating movement into everyday instruction with minimal extra planning. Participants will explore practical strategies for getting students up and moving during lessons, both indoors and outdoors, without sacrificing curriculum expectations or instructional time. The focus is on simple, low-prep approaches that can be layered onto existing lessons across subjects and grade levels.
Educators will experience movement-based activities firsthand, reflect on how they could be adapted for varied learners, and discuss real-world logistics such as transitions, safety, and classroom management. An important component of the session will be collaborative lesson redesign: participants are asked to bring a previously taught lesson plan, which we will modify in small groups to incorporate meaningful movement and/or opportunities to take learning outside.
Teachers will leave with adaptable strategies, example templates, and renewed confidence in making learning more active, accessible, and enjoyable for all students. Whether teaching primary, middle years, or high school, this session offers actionable ideas that can be implemented the very next day—no major overhaul required.
