The European PhD-Net in Philosophy
The European Ph.D. -Network in Philosophy is a joint scholarly program aimed at promoting the scientific quality and the internationalization of doctoral education, as well as providing doctoral students enhanced career possibilities. The participants of this network are the University of Bergen, Bielefeld University, University of Bologna, University of Bucharest, University of Helsinki, and Uppsala University.
The structure and activities of the Net are the responsibility of the Net’s steering board and subject to the approval of the relevant authorities in the participating institutions.
The Net is designed for doctoral students in philosophy. While they form the target group, the Net also allows participating universities to share best practices and strengthen cooperation at the level of doctoral training.
The Net is primarily focused on core areas in theoretical philosophy (Philosophy of Science, Epistemology, Metaphysics, Philosophical Logic and Philosophy of Logic, Mathematics and Language, Philosophy of Mind, and Meta-ethics.)
The educational aims of the Net are:
To provide joint supervision within its international network and to award a Diploma Supplement under the Agreement on Educational Cooperation signed by all six participating universities.
To offer a highly structured international curriculum and, if possible, a stay-abroad period in one of the participating universities. The length of such a stay is approximately three to nine months. The Net aims to establish Erasmus exchange agreements in order to fund these research stays. Alternatively, the funding for such visits may also be covered either by the students’ salary from their home university or a grant from a foundation.
To integrate the program’s doctoral students into international academic communities. At the end of the program’s cycle, the students will have established a network of contacts in all the participating institutions and with the Net’s supervisors and student colleagues.
To acquaint the program’s doctoral students with state-of-the-art theories, methodologies, approaches, and concepts in the fields of contemporary philosophy.
To provide the students with multiple formats for feedback and dialogue.
To monitor closely the progress of each student’s writing process.
To encourage independent research from early stage on by fostering publication and conference experience on the international level.
To foster and enhance the supervision skills and practices of the program’s supervisors, thus contributing to the promotion of best practices at their home universities.
Each university decides how it integrates the students’ participation in the Net within its degree requirements. The steering board decides how many study credits it awards the students for participation in the Net’s curriculum.
