In the 2020–21 school year, 14.7 million students across the U.S. were chronically absent. That’s nearly double the number before COVID-19. These aren’t just missed days—they’re missed opportunities to learn, grow, and connect.
Chronic absence—defined as missing 10% or more of school days for any reason—can derail a child’s ability to:
Learn to read by the third grade
Succeed in middle school
Graduated from high school
And the impact isn’t felt equally. Children living in poverty, students of color, and those with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be chronically absent. Often, these absences stem from real-life barriers: health issues, lack of transportation, food insecurity, or emotional stress—not just truancy.
But here’s the truth: chronic absence is solvable. And one of the most powerful solutions is simple—a caring adult who shows up.
A mentor doesn’t just help you with homework; they make they help a child feel:
Seen and valued
Motivated to attend school
Supported through life’s challenges
Connected to a larger community
When a child knows someone is rooting for them, showing up becomes easier. Learning becomes possible. Dreams feel reachable.
At Grandparents’ Hands & CTC Freedom Homes, we’re launching the Legacy Match Mentor Program—a healing-centered initiative that pairs youth with caring adults who honor legacy, kindness, and connection.
We’re proud to partner with The Mentoring Center to ensure every match is intentional, trauma-informed, and rooted in trust.
If you’ve ever wished you could make a difference in a child’s life, this is your moment.
👉 Volunteer as a mentor.
