You have completed your Work Interest Assessment on FOCUS 2 to see the top three work interest areas that are important to you. What does that really mean?
The Holland Interest Codes are a way to classify people with their interests so they can be matched with well-fitting careers. The concepts were developed by Dr. John L Holland, an academic psychologist. Dr. Holland's theory proposes that there are six broad categories into which all careers can be classified. These same six areas can be used to describe people, their personalities, and their interests.

What do you do if the Holland codes on your FOCUS 2 assessment are different than the self-estimate you did just now? That can happen. Are your top three codes the same, but in a different positions? Did you get completely different codes? Remember, assessments aren’t magic. Only you can decide what is the best-fit for you. So if your assessment results are different, ask yourself why. Think about which codes really represent you best—your assessment, your self-estimate, or a combination of the two? Sometimes, people answer assessment questions with “shoulds.” I should like this or shouldn’t do that. The “shoulds” can come from pressures—from family, from society, from yourself to make more money or take less risks. Just remember, when you think about who you are—what you like, what your work personality is—make sure you allow yourself to be free to pick what’s best for you. When you evaluate careers, you will be considering lots of different factors before you choose, but for now, just follow your interests to see where they may lead you. And if you’re not sure, that’s why Career Development Specialists are here to help you.
