People think career development is supposed to be a direct, orderly, sequential, straight path--finish high school, pick a major, graduate college, find a job, advance in your career, retire.
Career development actually is much more of a journey with twists, turns, and side roads, where new experiences and opportunities sometimes lead us to unexpected destinations.
What step are you currently in based on the wheel on the left?
How does this wheel align with the "My Career Planning Involvement" assessment you completed on FOCUS 2? What step does that assessment indicate you are on?
What are TWO things you would need to do in order to move yourself forward to the next step on this career wheel? Write them down.
See the dotted line arrow? What do you think this represents?
Some people see this as a mistake. You went through the process, started a career, hated it, and had to start all over again. Can that happen? Sure.
But for people who truly go through this process, they can't make a mistake. Instead, the dotted line can mean that they are ready for a career advancement, or the challenge of a brand new career. Or, maybe their life values have changed, and they want their career to reflect that.
The dotted line means that your choices now will not lock you in for life if you don't want them to. The choices you make today--about your major, your career--might be just the first choices you make, not the only choices.
