FLIP (formerly FLIPGRID)

Flip (formerly Flipgrid) is a free-to-use video discussion platform owned by Microsoft for use in classroom environments. The platform is available via a web browser, or through a mobile app on iOS and Android devices. Tasks are created in the platform and shared with groups of students, who use their computer or phone cameras to record their videos or responses to their peers' videos.

Flip is used in almost every Connected Learning module. The videos posted for the tasks are secure and visible only to students and teachers participating in the Connected Learning collaboration. Every 3 months, the videos posted by previous groups will be "hidden" unless teacher requests otherwise by email to connectedlearning22 @ gmail .

Kahoot!, founded in 2012, is a Norwegian game-based learning platform. It allows teachers to run game-like quizzes, which they can prepare themselves or by editing the public ones.

The site can be used in class, with students looking at an interactive whiteboard, projector, or computer monitor, but also online, through any screen-sharing tool. Students connect their own devices using a generated PIN, which is displayed on the teacher’s screen. Points are awarded for correct and quick answers. It can also be assigned as a self-paced learning project. Kahoot! can easily be changed into a content-delivery platform by placing slides between questions.

The free account can be set on kahoot.com  and it allows teachers to create multiple-choice and true or false questions, with adjustable time and point value. Students do not need an account to play.

Reports are rather limited due to the way students connect to the platform. They are designed to provide immediate feedback rather than to monitor long-term progress.

Book Creator is a digital tool that enables students to create and read multimodal digital books. It is an ideal tool for enhancing student engagement through story creation and multimedia design. When creating their own books, students can either generate their own content (by typing, drawing, or uploading self-made videos, audio files, and images) or they can curate online multimedia resources from the Internet. Book Creator can also be used in project-based learning activities because it allows real-time collaboration for multiple students to create one book. While students will get the most educational benefit out of designing their own books, they can also read multimodal books designed by others to enrich their knowledge.

Signing up on www.bookcreator.com, teachers start off with one library with up to 40 books in it. For more books, pricing options for individual teachers or schools start at $12/mo. Teachers add students to their library with a code.

ChatGPT is a chatbot, which was released on November 30, 2022. This powerful tool, developed by OpenAI, can be very useful in education. Originally, it was released as freely available, but because of its gaining popularity, it now operates on a freemium model, meaning that you can access a free version (GPT-3.5) or a more advanced, but paid, GPT-4. It is important to remember that the free version finished its training in January 2022, and therefore has no access to knowledge developed after this date. Currently, it is one of the fastest developing software applications.
