TOPIC: SPORTS - LESSON 3 & 4 & 5
Favorite sportsperson
(3 x 45 min)
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
1) to practice listening, speaking, and writing about sports
2) to practice citing and assessing reliability of online information
3) to practice 21st-century skills
PROCEDURES
STEP 1: Find reliable information about your favorite sportsperson, for example, what makes them special, why did you choose them, what makes them a great role model, and more.
TIP: Use STUDENT RESOURCES to help you assess the reliability. For example, check out Lateral Reading, How to Evaluate, or How to Detect Bias. Your last slide should include properly cited BIBLIOGRAPHY.
STEP 2: Use Canva (or another slideshow-making app/tool.) Make 8-10 interesting slides with pictures and key words/phrases. On the first slide, introduce new vocabulary for your audience. You should choose at least 10 new or difficult words from your slide show and explain them in English.
TIP: Remember to rephrase the information, write your own sentences for your talking script, and cite your sources for both text and pictures.
TIP: Challenge yourself to learn something NEW! Check out: How to create a Talking Presentation on Canva || Present & Record Feature!
STEP 3: Record your presentation. Remember, you must always say much more than what is written on the slide.
TIP: If using Canva is not possible, use another app/tool to record your voice and add it to your presentation as a voiceover.
Step 4: On THIS Padlet post the link to your recorded presentation and a short written introduction to it.
Step 5: In the same padlet leave comments on other students' presentations. Write a comment of about 30-60 words using appropriate language of appreciation and positive feedback. You may use the following guiding questions.
PROCEDURES
GUIDING QUESTIONS:
Have you heard before about the mentioned sportsperson?
Would you like to see this sportsperson in action?
Is this sport popular in your country, too? If not, do you think it could become popular?
OPTIONAL EXTRA INTERCULTURAL MILE: Watch this short video (Australian accent!) on how to get started with sports commenting. Also watch this 50 second sports commentary reel on ParaSports. (American accent!)
With a partner from another school/country:
Research ONE YouTube video EACH of a sports commentary - search for an exciting game you like watching (or watched!) in which two commentators were commenting on the game.
Negotiate which reel is a better example of sports commentary to emulate by you two.
Choose a max 2 minutes of any sports game reel to comment on (regardless of who's commenting on it, mute the original commentary).
Jointly write the text of your own commentary on this game fragment, playing the role of two commentators.
Record a voiceover audio to attach to the muted 2 minute reel you chose.
Post your jointly created reel on THIS Padlet for others to watch, listen and comment on it.
HEADS UP: In lesson 8 you will return to THIS Padlet again and leave comments on the videos.
