(2 x 45 min)
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
1) to stimulate critical thinking
2) to practice listening comprehension, note taking and sports vocabulary
3) to practice 21st-century skills
PROCEDURE
Step 1: Find a sports podcast of your interest, for example, in this list of sports podcasts by Leonardo English. They are about 20 minutes long. You can also use Google to find another podcast about sports to use for this task.
Below you can find GUIDING QUESTIONS that will help you make your choice.
Step 2: Listen to your chosen podcast - the WHOLE podcast, 20 minutes. Yes! You can do it! ;) Take notes using the Cornell University note taking strategy, (it's very effective ).Download the template HERE.
Step 3: Based SOLELY on your NOTES, write a 200-250 word NEWS REPORT on the issues you heard in the podcast. Write it on a Google doc and set the sharing to "all with the link can view and comment" before you copy the link to share.
TIP: Remember, a news story or report is divided into 5 parts, namely:
Headline – tells what the story is about.
Byline – shows who wrote the story.
Lead – tells the most important facts (5 W's)
Body – contains more information and details.
Ending – gives something to think about (especially if the issue is controversial).
You can find some examples of news reports in additional SPORTS TIPS.
Step 4: On THIS Padlet (Password CL-SPORTS), post the link to the podcast you chose and a short introduction (what the podcast is about), and under that, a link to your written report on Google Docs.
Step 5: In the same padlet post your comment/response for 1 or more reports. Each comment should be approx. 30-60 words. You may use the guiding questions.
