TOPIC: RESIDENCE - Lesson 6 & 7 & 8

What would you take, what would you buy?

(3 x 45 min)

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

1) to practice critical thinking and justifying opinions

2) to practice 21st-century skills

3) to change the world :)

PROCEDURES

STEP 1 - You accompanied Kenna during her move to LA. Now it's YOUR turn! Imagine that you are moving abroad for one school year for an Erasmus student exchange. You can chose your dream destination!

Consider which items are essential for your everyday life. What makes you happy and feel like at home? For which objects do you have some particular feelings and you would never replace these things? Think about all everyday use items, such as clothes, linen, kitchen items, bath and toiletries or electronic devices.

Make two lists - one of essential things you would take with you and one of things you will need to buy as soon as you arrive at your new place (a room or a shared apartment), because you can't imagine life without them, but for some reasons it doesn't make sense to take them with you.

Upload the prepared lists to this PADLET

TIP: SCROLL DOWN to the bottom of the Padlet and make sure to add your name, contact info and what country are you from.

TIP Each list can contain only 5 positions! Imagine you can take with you only 5 things and buy only 5 things, too! The budget you can spend is only € 200 (or equivalent in another currency), as you prefer to set aside some money for eating out with your new friends!

STEP 2 - Read through other students' lists and choose a partner for the second part of the activity.  Make a connection with this person and once s/he agrees to work with you, both of you move your lists to the "PAIRED" column, so other students will know you're not available as a potential working partner any more.

EXTRA INTERCULTURAL MILE: Choose a partner from another school and if possible, from another country as this module aims at international collaboration. Try to chose a person whose list looks familiar to yours, because it indicates that you think in a similar way.

STEP 3 - Together with your partner, pretend you're moving for the Erasmus exchange together and will live as roommates. Merge your lists and make the common lists of things to take and buy. Negotiate and try to come up with the most convincing arguments!

TIP Make a connection with your partner and set up a way of communication. Find the best way of communication for both of you - email conversation, exchange of comments in a Google Doc, chat online or maybe even a short video meeting?

ALERT: Before proceeding to the collaboration, set the deadlines which suit both of you. Respect each other's time and availability, take into consideration the TIME ZONES, and also make sure you don't slow down your partner and make him/her wait for your responses too long! Establishing a successful collaboration is an additional skill you're practicing at this module.

STEP 4 - Upload your final lists to this PADLET again. Read the lists prepared by other groups. Were there any items that surprised you? Why? Write comments about it. Remember to be kind and not to offend anyone as this activity has quite a private aspect.

Questions for students to contemplate:

REFLECTION & EVALUATION

The process of reflection begins when a person refers to his/her own experience and recollects what has occurred, reconsiders the experience, and reevaluates it. This effective strategy also improves critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
