IB ENGLISH B EXTENSION

IB English B extension chiefly aims to provide practice of Paper 1 and speaking. Naturally, feel free to tweak the tasks to the needs of your students. Here is the list of text types, sourced from www.thinkib.net , which you can download and use as needed. 

FOOD

TASK 1: CREATE a new type of sandwich and DESIGN a campaign to market it / advertise it. 

Remember to use persuasion in your campaign: see here for examples.


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  You recently read an article which gave you a surprising insight into an aspect of alternative foods and sparked an idea for a new kind of sandwich. You want to share your reactions with a wider public. Write a text in which you describe the article you read, evaluate its content, and offer your own conclusions about the quality of the alternative food and the idea of a new kind of sandwich.

CULTURE

TASK 1: CHOOSE a building of cultural significance in your city that's not very well known. PRETEND to be a junior reporter aiming to break into the real news world. MAKE a selfie video in front of it, explaining its significance to your peers in an engaging, reporter-like tone. SHARE the videos on a Padlet or FLIP (your teacher will provide you with the link).


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  A building of great cultural significance has fallen into a state of neglect. The local council is now proposing to demolish it and replace it with a public park. You want to stop the council from going ahead with this plan. Write a text in which you explain why you oppose the demolition, suggest an alternative use for the building, and justify why your suggestion would be more useful for the community.

TRAVEL

TASK 1: Pretend you've been hired as the new PR consultant for your city council. As a much younger person, you've decided to present the local tourist attractions to the council in a new light, a youthful perspective. CREATE a presentation and 3-minute talk on these attractions and PERSUADE the council to include them in the new promotional materials they will soon launch to attract more tourists. SHARE the presentations on a Padlet (your teacher will provide you with the link).


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  The government has proposed a housing development project built in place of your local national park, which will not only result in environmental damage but also deprive the community of the best tourist attraction. You strongly object to the project and wish to raise awareness among the local community. Write a text describing the government’s project, explaining the negative impact it will have, and persuading the community to take action.

SHOPPING

TASK 1: Social media overflow with "cute dog" or "lovely kitten" video clips. Some people make compilations of those clips into longer "funny cats & dogs" videos. With a partner PREPARE to DEBATE the statement: "Funny" dog and cat videos often include animals in distress. Therefore, not only should such clips be banned from Social Media, but those who post them should be fined. WRITE your opening arguments, ANTICIPATE the counterarguments, BE ready with a rebuttal, and PREPARE your closing argument. Total time per person = 4 minutes. FILM your debate and post the videos on FLIP (your teacher will provide you with the link).


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  You are concerned that too many people are buying pets these days without understanding the responsibilities involved. You want to share your thoughts about this issue with other animal lovers. Write a text in which you reflect on why this is happening, explain the problems this can lead to, and what one should consider before keeping a pet.

IDENTITY

TASK 1: RESEARCH the topic of "the teenage brain" or "the teenage mind" on the internet and from your carefully selected sources (written by authorities such as doctors or specialists) COMPILE a list of ideas. Then ASK ChatGPT to write you a list of ideas on the "teenage brain or "the teenage mind." COMPARE the two lists. With a partner, COMPARE your four lists and DISCUSS your findings. What do they mean? What conclusions can you draw? 


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  You recently watched a documentary which gave you a surprising insight into an aspect of the human mind and teenagers' identity, and you want to share your reactions with a wider public. Write a text in which you describe the documentary you watched, evaluate its content, and offer your own conclusions about its quality.

TIP: Prepare for a surprise no matter which documentary you watch. Think: to what extent does it illustrate your thoughts and feelings, your behavior and your identity?   

SPORTS

TASK 1: RESEARCH a weird/extreme sport. ENSURE you find information promoting it as well as banning it or cautioning against it. CREATE a short presentation/website on it, taking into account both sides of the argument, examining the biases that each side has preconceived, and drawing your own conclusions. 


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  The students at your school have proposed the idea of organizing a club focused on extreme sports. You have been assigned the responsibility of promoting this club within the school. Write a text in which you describe the sports that students can engage in, offer information on the required equipment and documentation, outline safety precautions, and extend an invitation to students to join and participate regularly.

HEALTH

TASK 1:  With a partner, or individually, CONDUCT a simple experiment with plants near your home/s. Select several low-hanging leaves and mark them underneath with a marker 1,2,3,4,5. Each day wipe the top side of the leaf with a cotton ball and take a photo of it, mark it with the day/leaf number. After 5 days, COMPARE the dust color on the leaves/cotton and if you work with a partner, compare your discoveries. THINK about the reasons for differences or similarities. 

Your teacher may assign you with an oral task to explain your findings in a short talk on video. Prepare the text of your talk and back it up with online resources. 


TASK 2: Paper 1 practice:  You read an article which claims that cities are responsible for most of the world’s carbon emissions and cause respiratory illnesses. You feel your city could be doing more than it already is. Write a text for your fellow citizens in which you describe one source of carbon emissions within your city, present measures to reduce the pollution it causes, and explain why the measures would benefit the population.
