This paper was presented at the Brownbag Seminar Series, Deakin University on April 12, 2021 and at the Melbourne Trade Workshop on December 08, 2021 at the University of Melbourne. This paper was presented at the 15th Australian Trade Workshop virtually organized on April 10, 2022 hosted by the University of Canterbury, New Zealand.

Abstract:  From the shipment departure to the delivery point at destination, both exporters and importers are incentivized to insure against numerous risks that can emerge at every step along this process.  Using a sample of bilateral trade in freight insurance services among more than 50 countries for the 2000-2014 period, this paper studies how countries protect against risks in international trade. We focus on a comprehensive set of risks associated with the shipment transport, armed conflicts and terror in them, and the development of their port and legal systems.  We have made several important findings. First, countries located further away from each other have significantly higher trade in freight insurance services. Second, armed conflicts in the trading pairs have no significant impact on their bilateral trade in freight insurance services while terror in them significantly increases it. This finding is in line with the argument that armed conflicts in the trading pairs reduce more merchandise trade and the odds of successful freight insurance claim than terrorism. Third, trading pairs with better port systems have significantly less bilateral freight insurance service trade. Finally, we find that trading pair with better enforcing contract indicator in terms of the time for resolving a commercial dispute through a local first-instance court trade more in freight insurance services.
