"St. Cyril and St. Methodius" university of Veliko Tarnovo is the largest state university in Bulgaria outside the capital. There are nine faculties - Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Modern Languages, Faculty of History, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Orthodox Theology, Faculty of Fine Arts, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics; two departments - Department of Language Teaching and Department of Continuing Education and Qualification of Teaching Specialists; Pleven College of Education; Branch Vratsa.
There are five departments in the Faculty of Economics – „Tourism“, „Economic Theory and International Economic relations“, „Finances and Accounting“, „Economic Management“, „Organization and Methods of Social Activities“.
The Tourism teaching has been a part of the Faculty of Economics since 1997. The university has been accredited in the professional field 3.9 Tourism in education and qualification degrees "bachelor" and "master".

National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
The Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) is the oldest institution in modern Bulgaria. It was founded on 11 October 1869 and began its activity as a Bulgarian Learned Society on 12 October 1869.
Today, BAS comprises 42 autonomous scientific units. It employs about 3,000 scientists, accounting for about 15% of those engaged with science in Bulgaria. BAS produces about half of the scientific output in the country.
The National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences has four departments: Geophysics, Seismology and Seismic Engineering, Geodesy and Geography. Department of Geography, which develops research in the field of tourism, is the successor of the Institute of Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, established as an independent unit within the system of the Academy in 1950. As of 1st July 2010, it became part of the newly established National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (NIGGG – BAS).
Nowadays, the National Institute of Geophysics, Geodesy and Geography (NIGGG – BAS) has three divisions – “Physical Geography”, “Economic and Social Geography” and “Geographic Information Systems” (GIS).
Since its establishment, the Institute of Geography (and later the Department of Geography) has been publishing a scientific academic journal of the latest research in the field of geography: between 1951 and 1974 – the scientific series of “Proceedings of the Institute of Geography” was published, while from 1974 on – the scientific academic journal has been published under the name “Problems of Geography “.
