History of Concrete Canoe

A Brief History

Concrete canoe competitions have been held for the past 50 years, challenging college students to design, build, and race canoes made out of concrete. With the competition formalized by the ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers), students can now compete against many universities in their region and progress to society-wide competition. UMD has been represented in society-wide competition twice within the last decade.

Where We Are Today

As we return to in-person competitions, UMD Concrete Canoe is taking a look at rebranding the club team to widen the scope of the team's activities to encourage more undergraduate involvement and represent more diverse Civil Engineering sub-disciplines.
