You’re going to look at job listings for entry-level development positions on a job listing site. We recommend the LinkedIn professional networking site. You don’t need to sign up for an account to do this.
From the LinkedIn homepage, start by searching for ‘Junior Software Developer’ roles, focusing on the country or state that you live in. Don’t spend too long on this – 15 minutes of exploring is enough.
Read some of the adverts that come up, particularly any companies or jobs that sound interesting and think about the following questions:
What kind of companies are recruiting developers and what skills are they asking for?
How do the skills or experience required vary between jobs and how many skills required are specifically technical?
What non-technical skills do the adverts share in common?
Which other team members do the adverts suggest the role collaborates with?
Which of the technical requirements have you heard of?
Do you feel the expectations for entry-level positions are reasonable?
Perhaps you’d like to deepen your search. Explore what other positions are available in a company that sounds interesting. Alternatively, look at jobs in different fields such as QA, software project management or product ownership.
