Study bit

Sophie Pope was born in 1988 in Sheffield, England. She studied for two years at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester with David Horne and completed her Master's in Composition at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart with Caspar Johannes Walter. In 2013 she spent a semester at the Manhattan School of Music with Nils Vigeland. She is a founding member of the Stuttgarter Kollektiv für aktuelle Musik (S-K-A-M).

International bit

Her music is performed internationally: in Belo Horizonte, Brazil as part of the “eu gostaria de ouvir” new music festival, in Tel Aviv as part of a German-Israeli exchange, New York, and Krakow during the Axes Composer Triduum in 2011. Also Canada as part of the Thin Edge New Music Collective's Commissioning Fund!

In 2011-2012 she was a scholarship holder funded by the Society of the Friends of the MH Stuttgart and in 2012-2013 of the Deutschland Stipendium funded by the Sparda Bank.

2016 RMN Calssical Calls for Scores for II a crow (solo violin). In 2013 she was a prize winner at the Acht Brücken festival in Cologne for string quartet and electronics. In 2012 she was awarded the Honorary Mention from the Prix Ton Bruynèl for to a crow for flute and tape, and the 3rd prize of the Crossover Composition Award for violin duet.

2018 lecturer at the very first International Congress for Wind Band Music in Neu-Ulm.

Conducting

She currently conducts the Musikverein Bad Cannstatt, Posaunenchor Kornwestheim, and Posaunenchor Schorndorf. In May 2017 she will conducted the Kreisverbandsorchester Stuttgart-Filder with a premiere of her latest piece Caipora for wind band.

Personal bit

Her music is often influenced by nature; recent pieces include crow sounds manipulated electronically and transcribed for violin; the sounds of crickets, cicadas and grasshoppers combined in an orchestral work; the sea, and VLF earth sounds. Other sonic influences come from the overtone and undertone rows, folk music from various cultures, church bells, muezzins, power tools, speech and language.

Her other interests include trombone, football (the English sort), going to the woods, cycling, swimming in cold water, brass bands and experiencing new places (and eating their food).

Ihre Musik wird international aufgeführt: in Brasilien beim „eu gostaria de ouvir“ Festival, Tel Aviv als Teil eines Deutsch-Israeli Austausches, New York, und Krakau im Rahmen des Axes Triduums 2011. In 2014 spielte The Thin Edge New Music Collective eine Auftragskomposition in Kanada.

Prahlen

2011–2012 war sie Stipendiatin der Gesellschaft der Freunde der MH Stuttgart und 2012-2013 Stipendiatin des Deutschland Stipendiums.

2016 RMN Music Calls for Scores II a crow für Solo Violine. 2013 war sie Preisträgerin beim Acht Brücken Festival für Streichquartett und Elektronik. 2012 gewann sie ein Honorary Mention vom Prix Ton Bruynèl für elektroakustische Musik für to a crow und den 3. Preis bei dem Crossover Composition Award 2012 für Geigenduo (the Twiolins).

2018 Dozent beim ersten Internationalen Kongress für Blasmusik in Neu-Ulm.

Dirigieren

Sie dirigiert zur Zeit den Musikverein Bad Cannstatt, Posaunenchor Kornwestheim, Posaunenchor Schorndorf und die Bietigheimer Blechbläser. In 2017 war sie Gastdirigentin bei dem Kreisverbandsorchester Stuttgart-Filder mit einer Uraufführungen ihres Stückes Caipora für Blasorchester.

Persönlich

Ihre Musik wird oft von der Natur beeinflusst; Krähen, Heuschrecke, Zikaden, Grashüpfer, das Meer und sehr tiefe Erdfrequenzen. Sie arbeitet zudem noch mit den Ober- und Untertonreihen, mit Volksmusik verschiedener Kulturen, Kirchenglocken, Muezzin, Elektrowerkzeug, Sprechen und Sprachen.

Andere Interessen sind Posaune, Fußball (europäisch), im Wald zu spazieren, Radfahren, im kalten Wasser zu schwimmen, Blechblasgruppen und neue Orte zu erfahren (und ihr Essen zu essen).
