Elective students

This piece of work has been created by Bethan Harris and Isabel Sawyer as part of our SSC5B in Creative Enquiry. In order to create this piece, we conducted a survey of final year medical students and asked them to anonymously state their thoughts and feelings about progressing from medical student to doctor. 

The anonymous students can be seen seated in the Perrin Lecture Theatre, a place we have spent many hours across the years. The iconic green seats, with the red singular seat is a familiar sight and one that provides a suitable backdrop for this piece. The students are faceless, preserving their anonymity and perhaps representing the loss of self and belonging that has taken place throughout their time at medical school, where one becomes part of a collective group, rather than being an individual. 

Above each student, a phrase or word from the survey can be seen. The phrases vary from positive, to negative, and give us an insight into the emotions of our cohort at such a pivotal time in our careers. We have enjoyed creating the piece, hearing the thoughts of our peers and having time to reflect on our medical school experiences and our thoughts on the future.
