COMPASS and iota Seminar -- Code of Conduct
These seminars are platforms for students to give talks and learn from each other. We strictly discourage toxic or discouraging behavior towards any speaker. Please follow these ethics while attending:
Respect the flow of discussion : If you have a doubt, wait until others finish clarifying theirs. Do not interrupt or overpower conversations -- allow everyone to speak.
Be mindful of unanswered questions : Even experts may not know every answer. Present your doubt clearly, but if the speaker cannot respond, avoid dragging the matter further and disturbing the audience.
Keep questions purposeful : All questions should aim at learning or clarification. Avoid repeated interruptions or drawing attention to details the speaker is not focusing on. If you have multiple comments, reserve them for the end.
Respect the speaker’s choices : Do not insult, criticize, or make the speaker uncomfortable for mistakes or skipped details. Speakers have full freedom to omit what they find unnecessary. If you believe you never make mistakes or know better than the speaker, this forum is not for you.
Note: Anyone found engaging in toxic behavior or violating these ethics will be removed from the talk.
Note on the Format of COMPASS and iota Seminars
COMPASS Seminar : These focus on presentations where speakers give expository talks on topics they have studied or research talks on their own work. Speakers generously share their time without personal gain, contributing out of a sense of academic duty.
iota Seminar : A group of people among the iota seminar members selects a research paper, and one member reads and presents it. Both the speaker and audience engage in mutual learning. The presenter is a peer -- often only slightly ahead -- and not expected to have every answer. The aim is collective understanding, not cross-examination. Keep questions clarifying, constructive, and kind. Our goal is to build up, not put down.
