Although comparing fractions is often thought of as a junior concept, this notion plays a critical role in early explorations of fractions. When students use representations to engage in learning about fractions they intuitively engage in comparisons of fractions.
Read through pages 1 and 2 of Being Responsive to Student Thinking, paying close attention to how the students' gestures and oral responses reveal their understanding.
