Partitioning Rectangles

• Construct a large rectangle on graph paper.

• Partition your rectangle into fourths.

• Shade in one one-fourth of your rectangle.

• Now partition each of your fourths into thirds.

• What fraction of the area is shaded using the new fractional unit?

• Write a symbolic equation with these two fractions.
