The idea of compulsory education gained traction in the 19th century, with Massachusetts passing the first compulsory attendance law.
The Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century had a profound impact on education. The landmark Supreme Court case of Education in 1954, which declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.
No Child Left Behind Act: this legislation aimed to improve the quality of education by focusing on accountability, standardized testing, and closing achievement gaps among diverse student populations.

Out of all 37 OECD countries, only Israel, Turkey, Greece, Chile, Mexico, and Colombia scored less than the United States in the math test. Most of these countries were also the worst performers in reading and science.
Teenagers in the United States are among the top performers in reading proficiency in developed countries, while consistently underperforming the rest of the developed nations in math, according to the latest Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results.
In science, the United States also outperformed the average for all OECD ranked countries. When it came to math skills, however, the U. S. students continued to be outperformed by peers from other developed countries.

There have been more than 630 mass shootings across the US so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed. Their figures include shootings that happen in homes and in public places.
For each of the last three years there have been more than 600 mass shootings - almost two a day on average.
The deadliest such attack, in Las Vegas in 2017, killed more than 50 people and left 500 wounded. The vast majority of mass shootings, however, leave fewer than 10 people dead.
