We live in an era when our daily lives and routines are intertwined with technological mechanisms; everyday, these mechanisms continue to develop and thrive simultaneously as we continue to depend on them. As such, the matter of computer addiction has become prevalent among users, especially adolescents whose current generation has grown up alongside devices and gadgets. An unhealthy attachment to computers, the internet, and various online games has begun to affect one’s physical and mental health, affecting how they take care of themselves and interact with those around them. It has become a “21st Century epidemic” that has begun to spread behavioral issues among computer users (Zenebe et al., 2021). Although it may not be a virus that spreads and threatens people’s lives, people have begun to depend on whatever is on their screens. Computer addicts continue to lose touch with reality, affecting their health, wellbeing, and relationships with other people (Internet addiction, 2019).
Computer Addiction VS Other Forms of Addiction
We believe that addiction is not a result of the act that you participate in, but rather the feelings you have at the moment you partake in it. Alavi et al. (2012) claim that behavioral addictions, much like computer addiction, have few differences with those that involve substances such as alcohol and drugs. Both types mentioned bring about or heighten certain emotions that a person may be feeling. For instance, the internet and online games change how our brains may function (The Recovery Village, 2022); the sense of accomplishment we receive from video games becomes a substitute for real-life rewards. As a result, people who develop a computer addiction begin to crave this emotion more, which is comparable to how other addicts tend to desire substances and engage in particular acts due to gateway influences.
We aim to inform people, specifically the youth, about the negative effects of computer addiction so that they can live a more meaningful life where their heads are not glued to their screens. We wish to emphasize the importance of not spending too much time on the computer as it can lead to to the point where it interferes with daily activities, relationships, and overall well-being.
Our goal for the future is to convince people that there is more to life than staying on the computer and to encourage them to spend less time online. We want to spread our advocacy and encourage the world to take global action to limit screen time. We hope that one day we will be able to collaborate with other businesses and grow our brand in order to promote our cause.
