About This Toolkit

We invite you to explore this Photovoice Toolkit as a guide to how you can use it to meet your program’s goals and an inspiration for how it can engage the individuals who make your program possible. This toolkit provides an opportunity to learn how photography and storytelling can be used to elevate community voices and strengthen programs through shared reflection. Whether you are new to Photovoice or looking to deepen your practice, this toolkit offers practical tools, real-world examples, and facilitation strategies to help you engage participants in meaningful, creative, and ethical storytelling. As you read, we encourage you to imagine how these methods can support your own community’s stories, spark dialogue, and turn lived experience into insight and action.

This toolkit is designed to equip your organization with the knowledge, resources, and practical steps needed to create and implement your own Photovoice project. By putting cameras into the hands of service members and volunteers, Photovoice allows stories to be told through images and personal narratives, visualizing experiences that might otherwise go unseen.

This toolkit was developed and tested through the implementation of six Photovoice cohorts with AmeriCorps Seniors, VISTA, and other state programs across Virginia. Sessions were facilitated both in-person and virtually, allowing us to adapt the process to diverse settings and participant needs. The toolkit reflects best practices, lessons learned, and proven strategies gathered from these experiences.

Who This Toolkit Is For?

This toolkit has been developed for AmeriCorps programs, community-based service organizations, and partner initiatives that want to use Photovoice to amplify the lived experiences of service members, volunteers, and the communities they serve. Whether you are new to arts-based methods, participatory engagement or looking to deepen your volunteer engagement strategies, this resource aims to provide adaptable tools to meet the needs of your program.

What Is Photovoice?

Photovoice is a photography and visual storytelling practice that places cameras in the hands of individuals so they can document and reflect their lived experiences, perspectives, and ideas for change and collective action. Through photography, group dialogue, and narrative writing, participants work collaboratively to make meaning of their images and represent their communities and service in their own words. During our process to develop this toolkit, AmeriCorps Seniors and AmeriCorps members from various programs used photography to explore volunteerism, identify community strengths and challenges, and share their stories with broader audiences, including community members, organizational leaders, policymakers, and prospective AmeriCorps members.

Photovoice is an accessible and flexible tool that can be used to explore the goals of groups, organizations, and communities. According to Wang and Burris (1997) Traditionally, Photovoice has three main goals:

Why Use Photovoice?

Photovoice is a tool available to help you tell the stories of your programs or community organization from the perspective of the people closest to the work—the ones who understand it best: your members and/or volunteers.

It offers a creative way to highlight the voices of those closest to community challenges and solutions.

It is an adaptable, people-centered approach to understanding and communicating the impact of service. You can adapt a Photovoice project to fit your program needs and goals.

By placing cameras in the hands of participants, organizations can elevate lived experience as a form of knowledge and leadership. When you collaborate responsibly and inclusively to share stories, you don’t just tell better stories; you have the potential to build stronger, more connected communities.
