How to Use This Toolkit

This toolkit is designed to provide a series of resources to support you in planning, launching, and completing a Photovoice project. It offers a step-by-step framework that can be adapted for different communities, formats, and budgets to support your project goals.

In this toolkit, you will find practical guidance for facilitating Photovoice sessions including: 

• Ready-to-use templates and tools for implementation, such as consent forms, sample recruitment materials, sample session agendas, sample session slides, and photography management tools. 

• Techniques and templates to support participants in writing strong photo captions and narratives.

• Guidance on identifying  themes and insights from photos and discussions.

• Strategies for curating and presenting photos through community exhibits, reports, and digital platforms.

• Best practices for ethics, accessibility, and participant support throughout the project.

This toolkit is organized into five sections, along with a featured page highlighting the Photovoice demonstration sites across Virginia that helped inform and shape its development.
