Exams (200 pts.): There will be 2 exams, each worth 100 points. The exams are NOT cumulative. Exams will contain multiple choice and true/false questions. Exam questions will be drawn from the assigned readings as well as from all material covered during class (i.e., lectures, videos, class discussions, etc.). Make-up exams will only be given in cases with a documented medical excuse, family emergency, or authorized university activity. It is your responsibility to notify me prior to the exam if these circumstances arise. Both exams are due by 11pm on Blackboard on the due dates. Both exam links will be available under the “Exams” folder under Course Materials at 7am. You can find the exam review sheets and exam review jeopardy slides under the same folder for each exam.
Analytical Movie Review Paper (25 pts.): You will critically review a movie with scenes related to intercultural communication concepts we cover in class. You will identify 2-3 course concepts and analyze how they were applied / used in a feature-length film. Detailed instructions will be provided. This assignment is worth 25 points. Make-up assignments will only be given in cases with a documented medical excuse, family emergency, or authorized university activity. It is your responsibility to notify me prior to the due date if these circumstances arise. Analytical Movie Review Paper is due on 1/18 at 11pm on Blackboard dropbox link under “Analytical Movie Review Paper” folder. You can find the instructions for this assignment under the same folder.
Quizzes (100 pts.): 4 online quizzes will be given over the course of the semester. The quizzes cannot be made up without a documented reason for your absence. Quizzes are in fill in the blanks, true/false, and multiple-choice formats. Each quiz is worth 25 points. See the course schedule for quiz due dates. All quizzes are due by 11pm on Blackboard on the due dates. All quiz links will become available under the “Quizzes” folder under Course Materials at 7am.
Active Participation and Professionalism (25 pts.): Your active participation will be evaluated daily by your original discussion posts and reactions. For the days designated in the course schedule, you will post ONE original discussion post and ONE reaction to another student’s post on the same forum. You can post more if you want to, but only two of your contributions will count towards your grade. Your contributions will be evaluated on a completion basis, yet the criteria for this completion are as follows:
· Each post/reaction should be written in complete sentences. (2-3-word posts, incomplete / incoherent sentences or posts that lack a coherent argument will receive zero).
· Each post should be brief yet include a clear and coherent argument / stance and provide evidence for the claim made. (Simply stating an agreement with the original post without contributing a new idea or opinion based on course concepts will receive a zero.)
*** Discussion forums will open at 7am every day and close at 8pm, so on every class day you will have 13 hours to watch the lecture and participate in the discussion posts/reactions. As these count towards your in-class participation and require you to react to another student’s post within the designated time frame, no make-ups are granted. ***
