This course is an online asynchronous course, meaning it follows a weekly schedule but it has no scheduled Zoom or in-person classes.
Assignments are always due Sundays or Wednesdays by 11:59pm.
Your class will take place using MiraCosta's Canvas platform.
Our Canvas course front page includes important announcements, course due dates, and a Comm 207 Help Center that houses resources that I have gathered for you.
Reading and all assignments, including quizzes and presentations, are linked cohesively in your Modules.
Assignments can also be found individually within the “Assignments” tab.
To view your scores and class progress, click on the “Grades” tab on the left-hand menu.
Feedback for scores are always given within your assignment so you can go back to your submission to see your score and my comments. I’m happy to review and discuss graded work with you within ten days of releasing the score back to you.
I utilize Canvas “Announcements” each week to relay important information and provide reminders. Please have your Canvas notifications turned on or check your Canvas course each week.
I am available via email or Canvas messages each day. I welcome “just double-checking” type emails. I’m here for you! I am also happy to give you a call or hop on Zoom if you would like to talk about something that feels too long for an email. When reaching out, please indicate who you are and what class you are in, so that I may respond appropriately. I will respond in 24 hours or less.
Being in a virtual course means that you will need regular access to a computer in order to read online materials, record and upload videos, complete online quizzes, write papers, etc.
There will be occasions where you will be asked to video record yourself, as this class does have a presentation requirement, so a means for capturing that presentation and then uploading it to Canvas is necessary.Your computer camera or smartphone typically works just fine.
This class requires you to present in front of a live audience for at least one assignment. I have an assignment designed for you to present with your classmates via Zoom, but you have the option to find your own audience at home or online and present to them. Either way, be prepared to give at least one presentation in front of other people in any manner you prefer (at home, on Zoom, etc). See the final assignment for more details regarding what counts as audience members.
Daily access to our course on Canvas. Tutorials are available.
There is no textbook in this course but there is required reading each week that is available to you for free in your Canvas modules. Go to your course modules to view the weekly reading and related due dates.
For some of your presentations, you are required to have a live audience of three or more people, so you may want to use Zoom for those presentations to meet the audience requirement.
Although not mandatory, students often create YouTube accounts to assist in quickly compressing their video files for quicker uploading to Canvas. Students can keep their videos “unlisted” or simply delete their account when finished with this course.
