You may not know anyone from Macedonia but they do know what the US has been searching for this past election year. Fake news sites were satiating the internet for the past six months. The is some evidence that this could have influenced the election one way or another but no conclusion has been made yet. Most media outlets do not give them any credence but reports have surfaced that Facebook was promoting them. We here decided to look into one of these websites.
The website in question is "The New York Evening". This site contains news stories that are highly dubious and can be refuted with evidence. While these news stories are spreading a false narrative, our focus is on the website that contains this. What we did is something anyone can do with a computer and internet access. Using websites such as Who.is and IP Fingerprints can just about locate the whereabouts of the server the website is located.
We did a Who.is search on the site: thenewyorkevening.com
Results of this search shows us that the organization "1" is the owner of that site, or at least payed for it.
The address of the registrant is Esperanto br86, Kumanovo, Macedonia.
The domain name was registered on April 23th, 2016 and expires one month from now on April 23, 2017.
After an extensive search, the IP address is 108.167.161.135. That is located in a suburban location of Houston, Texas.
Our research shows the server hosting the site is located in Houston, Texas, under the Hostgator.com data center. They provide shared, virtual private servers, and web hosting. This information about the location is different from what we get Who.is site. What they provided was the name and location of the person who registered the website. We know the organization is called "1". According to the information, this individual is located in Kumanovo, Macedonia.
