House Sparrow
Reflection by Michael Galovic
The woodcarving you see here began with a commission request I received last year from Ed Loring of the Open Door Community. He had been moved by Luke 12:6-- “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight…Do not be afraid.”
House Sparrows are native to the Middle East, and likely had been there at the time these words were written. We can see them almost anytime in parking lots—with their finch-like chirping and quick flight. They are often on the ground and have adapted well to human structures. Think back to Amy Boyd’s message on stillness posted in this Lenten calendar on Feb 21 where she wrote how stillness leads to a conscious connection to God. Only in that connection can I truly enter a creative space. Only then can that creative urge emerge. When I make the decision to act on that urge, what flows through me is exhilaration, liberation, nourishment, and freedom—a love of life in the moment.
Birds fly all the time to explore the land around them. They can go north, south, east, west, up or down in an instant. Think of the Jimmy Buffett song “Wings”: “If you’re gonna fly high without fear, you’re gonna have to learn to love the atmosphere, and you gotta learn to use those wings, that you can’t see.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rohXydXScWg
Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer. And let faith be the bridge you build to overcome evil and welcome good.
