Geoscience Education
and Outreach
TREMORs is an educational project for Primary and Middle Schools focused on the knowledge of the seismic phenomenon and associated risk. It is sponsored by DiSPUTer (Department of Psychological, Health and Territorial Sciences - of the "G. d'Annunzio" University of Chieti-Pescara).
The project is part of the Research Project 'COLOSSEO' (Horizon 2020 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Grant Agreement n ° 795396) which aims to study potential structures capable of releasing earthquakes in central-southern Italy.
In line with the aims of the European research framework program Horizon 2020, TREMORs aims to promote the transfer of scientific research to society and to the subjects who can best benefit from it. In detail, the project strives to 1) promote knowledge of the earthquake as a natural phenomenon, 2) raise awareness of the seismic hazard of the territory in which we live 3) foster a resilient coexistence with the associated risk.
The target is represented by young citizens who will be the next successors in the management and planning of the territory and the reduction of risks, including the seismic one. The School represents the main reservoir of awareness and responsible citizenship. Primary and Middle School students, therefore, represent the privileged users of the outreach target that the educational project aims to pursue.
TREMORs proposes to Principals and Teachers active learning targeted at students of Primary- and Middle-School classes and held by me and other lecturers from the University 'G. d'Annunzio’ of Chieti-Pescara.
Taking into account the different learning levels, the following topics will be addressed during the in-class seminars:
- the 'earthquake' as a geological phenomenon and part of the 'Earth System';
- recognize a territory exposed to the seismic risk and the structures responsible for earthquakes;
- earthquakes in Italy and during history as recurring (instead of unexpected) events over time;
- examples of active faults and recent earthquakes in central-southern Italy;
- active learning with hands-on experiments and final KAHOOT game-based for final assessment of the learning level (https://kahoot.com/schools-u/)
Seminars can represent, for schools and teachers who want to take advantage of this activity, a moment of in-depth study and consideration within a broader teaching programme in Science classes.

TREMORs è un progetto informativo per le Scuole Primarie e Secondarie di 1° grado sulla conoscenza del fenomeno sismico e del rischio associato patrocinato dal DiSPUTer (Dip.to di Scienze Psicologiche, della Salute e del Territorio) dell’Università “G. d’Annunzio” di Chieti-Pescara (https://www.disputer.unich.it/).
Nasce come parte integrante di un progetto europeo ‘COLOSSEO’ (Horizon 2020 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Grant Agreement n°795396) che ha come obbiettivo lo studio di potenziali strutture in grado di rilasciare terremoti in Italia centro-meridionale (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/795396).
In linea con gli scopi del programma quadro di ricerca europeo Horizon 2020, TREMORs si propone di promuovere il trasferimento dei risultati della ricerca scientifica alla società ed ai soggetti che possono meglio trarne beneficio. In dettaglio, il progetto informativo ambisce a 1) promuovere la conoscenza del terremoto come fenomeno naturale (‘conosco il TerREMoto), 2) far acquisire una maggiore consapevolezza della pericolosità sismica del territorio nel quale viviamo 3) favorire una convivenza resiliente con il rischio associato (cOnvivo con il riSchio).
Il target è rappresentato da giovani cittadini i quali saranno i futuri responsabili della gestione e pianificazione del territorio, e della riduzione dei suoi rischi tra cui quello sismico. La scuola rappresenta il principale serbatoio di una cittadinanza consapevole e responsabile. I ragazzi delle scuole primarie e secondarie rappresentano, pertanto, i fruitori privilegiati di TREMORs e della divulgazione che il progetto informativo ambisce a perseguire.
TREMORs propone ai Dirigenti Scolastici ed agli Insegnanti che vorranno aderire a tale iniziativa, attività seminariali diretti a studenti delle classi di Scuola Primaria e Secondaria di 1° grado, tenuti da docenti/studiosi dell’Università ‘G. d’Annunzio’ di Chieti.
Tenendo conto delle diverse fasce di apprendimento, durante i seminari verranno approfondite tematiche inerenti:
- il ‘terremoto’ visto come fenomeno geologico e parte del sistema integrato ‘Terra’;
- riconoscere un territorio esposto al rischio sismico e le strutture responsabili di terremoti;
- i terremoti in Italia e nella storia come eventi non estemporanei ma ricorrenti nel tempo;
- esempi di faglie attive e di terremoti recenti in Italia centro-meridionale;
- attività laboratoriali e valutazione finale del livello di apprendimento attraverso quiz KAHOOT (https://kahoot.com/schools-u/).
I seminari possono rappresentare, per le scuole e gli insegnanti che vorranno usufruire di tale attività, un momento di approfondimento all’interno di una più ampia programmazione didattica nelle classi di Scienze.
