This is an interactive map of the interactions and impacts of European colonies, both short and mid term, to be used as a tool for students to learn about while studying colonial times in United States History. This site includes a basic synopsis for many major colonies, including their encounters with the Native peoples, their part in the story of slavery, and the impact of the colonies not only on colonists themselves, but on the tribes surrounding them. It is a way for students to receive a comprehensive outlook on the colonies without having to look at many sources.
*Note: All maps of tribal boundaries cannot be exact; these boundaries were difficult to determine given the technological deficiency and, depending on the year, fluctuated. For instance, The Utes had less land prior to the sixteenth century when they first met Spanish explorers. Upon the arrival of the horse to Ute country, their lands expanded as they became powerful hunters and warriors using the horse, and were able to reclaim lost land and more. It should be also noted that boundary lines are not meant to be precise; the intent of this map is not to show perfection of boundaries, but to visualize the impact on tribal lands as colonies grew – deterioration occurs and precision is not necessary for this concept to be understood.
