King Philip’s War 1675
Cause:
After three Wampanoag men were executed by Plymouth Colony in 1675, English settlements in New England were attacked. The New English colonies responded by calling out militia forces and attacking Narragansett settlements in Rhode Island.
Basic Info:
The Wampanoag and Narragansett struck back and burned Providence. The New England forces responded and King Philip’s forces were no match for them. King Philip was killed at his stronghold, Mount Hope, late the next year. New England and its Indian allies won the war but at a great cost to both sides. The Wampanoag and Narragansett tribes were almost completely gone, with little survivors. English villages and towns suffered severe damage such as burnings and only about a tenth of the soldiers died.
Impact:
The story of the first Thanksgiving starts well, but it ends with this war. At the end of the war, Philip’s head was cut off and mounted on a stake and left in Plymouth for several years as a warning to other tribes of the consequences. What started as a mutual friendship ended with the English forgetting their past alliance and prompting the Natives to war, ending their relationship with betrayal.
