For my Senior Exit Project, I took a couple of different steps to fulfill the 24 hour requirement. The first step that I took was contacting Mrs. Tiedemann, my mentor who works as the outreach leader at my church. She had previously done an interview with the Vail Voice that answered some of my questions about what inspired her service and how she came to be in her position, so the questions I ended up asking her were more in depth. I asked her questions about the most rewarding aspect of working with outreach programs and how she would describe the importance of servant leadership in the community. This gave me some insight on the topics of service and leadership from someone whose work entails those aspects. The other ways in which I completed my project was through gathering hours both by working on my own leadership abilities and serving the community. Some of my hours, as you will see on my journal entries and time log, came from my time serving as a State Officer for FBLA Arizona. Throughout my term, we have attended virtual trainings (in place of training that would have normally been in person) that thoroughly teach topics like leadership styles, business etiquette, presentation skills, and interview skills. Following these training sessions, we were given the opportunity to interact with chapters statewide through chapter visits and workshops. This allowed me to build my leadership and service skills during a unique timeframe in which outreach on a personal level was and is difficult. The final thing I did to collect my hours was community service. These service projects were anything from helping pack Thanksgiving food bags at my church to helping in classrooms around campus. I chose this topic because I believe that service and leadership are at the core of all organization and team settings. These fundamental characteristics are instilled in children as they begin to grow and mature during their teenage years. This holds very true for me personally and I felt that it was important to shed a light on the idea of service and leadership as I look towards the future and how I can exhibit and model both of those qualities. My research paper focused a significant amount on servant leadership, which is the bridging point between service and leadership. Servant leadership, in its most basic form, is the idea of putting others before yourself as a leader and thinking about the group thriving first and foremost. My paper also discussed servant leadership as it is found in the world through a handful of occupations, most commonly, the military. My research paper applies to my topic because they focus on the same topic just in two different ways. My research paper was primarily focused on servant leadership as you move into the college and career chapters of life whereas my project and service hours were more focused on me, as a high school student, working on service and leadership based situations in my everyday life.
