Get to know a bit about me!
Me and my cat, River, who does all of my coding with me!
My name is Nicole Jackson, and welcome to Colie's Carto, a compilation of my favorite and best projects. I graduated University of Colorado: Colorado Springs (UCCS) with a Bachelors of Arts in Geography and Environmental Studies, obtaining a certification for GIScience through the school as well. Prior to UCCS, I attended both the University of Tampa in Florida under Marine Biology and Environmental Studies with a Humanities focus as well as Pikes Peak State College, obtaining my Associate of Arts in Geography in a year. I obtained my A.A., B.A., and certifications in three years with a 3.98 final GPA.
Outside of my educational life, I have a significant amount of experience with technology and computers. This knowledge has helped to put me ahead and feel more comfortable working with online platforms such as ArcGIS. Furthermore, I delved into digital artwork for a long period of time, which soon turned into recreational graphic design. My skills in this field are substantial in creating graphics that are pleasing to the eye, which undoubtedly contributes to the field of GIS and geovisualization. I am also fluent in SQL database coding and RScript, giving me plenty more options to explore during my research!
Much of my inspiration associated with the environment was sourced from Marine Lab in Key Largo, Florida and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). In middle school, I attended an immersive educational trip to the Marine Lab to analyze coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves. This field experience at a young age heightened my fascination with sustainability and how to take care of the ocean. During high school, I ended up being accepted into a selective summer course through WHOI in 2021 regarding oceanography and sustainability, learning from some of the most prestigious analysts and marine biologists in the field. After these experiences, I want my future work to reflect that wonder I had as a child towards the ocean and center around human impacts on not only the ocean, but the planet as a whole.
