Anna or Hanny Smooke, spelled originally Smuck, but pronounced Smooke was born in Sighetu Marmetai (now Romania), Hungary in 1868. This town shuffled between being in Hungary and in Romania, so when Barbara and Joe Younger went to Hungary in 1989, they were unsuccessful in finding family roots. (Link to info on Sziget Jewish Community) Anna married Fisel/Phisel/ (pronounced FYsel) Junger, and Americanized to Phillip Younger (for whom Aunt Phyllis was named). He too, was born in Hungary (1864), but we do not know what city.
They, with other members of the family, immigrated in 1905 to Brooklyn, N.Y. In 1910 they lived on East 9th Street, Manhattan Ward 11, N.Y. Phillip was a tailor.
In 1910 Phillip was age 43 and Anna age 39. They had the following children with ages listed as of 1910: (ages may not be accurate.)
George 21
Fannie 18
Louis 15
Julia 13
Gussie 11
Jacob (always known as Jack) 9
Helen 6 (WHO LATER MARRIED BEN WEINBERG whom many of the family grew to know an love)

Jack lived in Salem and a local rabbi introduced him to Helen Rooks (then Radishinsky) and they later married. Jack was a mechanic, and when he joined the Radishinsky/Rooks family, they quickly trained him as a furrier, and he participated in the Rooks Stores which were furriers and later women’s apparel stores in Lynn, Salem, Beverly, Revere and Pariseau’s in Manchester N.H. The stores were in operation from about 1940 to 1990. Check out the Rooks family tree.
