The workshop CoFeeMOOC-v.2: Designing Contingent Feedback for Massive Open Online Courses took place on June 22, 2021, during the seventh European MOOCs Stakeholders Summit (EMOOCs) conference. 17 researchers attended the workshop through Zoom, whose previous experience with MOOCs, either as instructors or learners, triggered fruitful discussions regarding feedback interventions in MOOCs.
The objective of the workshop was to design feedback strategies based on a proposed conceptual framework, FeeD4Mi, that drives MOOC instructors in the reflection of feedback interventions. During the workshop, participants, in groups of 3-4 persons, were asked to collaboratively reflect on learners’ problems and decide interventions based on given real course designs. We followed as a guide the process and dimensions that FeeD4Mi includes. We involved the groups into two types of activities: a) initially they had to shape feedback decisions manually and b) later to apply and enrich the same decisions via a tool that semi-automatized their feedback choices into computer-interpretable designs.
Participants pointed out different learners’ problems, indicators and support ideas based on their personal experiences and the given course learning design. Apart from the feedback tasks, we asked participants to provide us input regarding their experience with the conceptual framework and the tool. We gathered evidence based on participants artefacts, observations, and self-reported comments. According to the results, participants found the FeeD4Mi process useful to concretize feedback aspects and the technological tool attractive. Specifically, FeeD4Mi seemed to facilitate them to decide for an appropriate feedback strategy and reflect on several factors related to learners’ problems. When it comes to the tool, it seemed to stimulate participants’ interest in further using it. On the other hand, participants highlighted several issues that need future enhancements. For instance, a few concepts of the framework were unclear and need definition, and some tool actions require better guidelines.
Overall, the workshop gave us the opportunity of fruitful discussion on the topic of feedback in MOOCs and set the perspectives for future research work. We would like to thank all the participants who joined, the EMOOCs21 Workshop Chairs and the EMOOCs Organizers for making this possible.
