about flex

On Your Own

Throughout the Semester, you can earn flex credits.

If you attend an event that is designed to help enhance student success, it counts for flex. Use the Flex Form and Track hours. Turn the form in to your dean for signature and to HR for tracking.

According to the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Flexible Calendar Program;

"The time allowed for faculty to obtain flexible calendar credit is limited to those activities designed to improve a college's staff, student, and instructional program (title 5, section 55724 (a) (4)). p. 15. "

The Guidelines also describe kinds of activities that can count towards flex. These examples go on for three pages. The bottom line is, anything that enhances student success and can be realistically tied to our College Instructional Program can be considered flexible activity. ( Anything that is part of your regular work load is not! e.g. grading, prepping for classes)

It should be noted that this is a guide and is not intended to be limited to these activities:

  • Curriculum design, including developing new programs and courses or revising existing courses and programs.
  • Meeting with counselors to address areas of concern.
  • Faculty and staff meetings to improve delivery of learning resource support services to students.
  • Meetings designed to improve a cohesive working relationship among members of the group (e.g., department, division, committee, mixture of college constituencies)
  • Individually designed activities to improve or enhance a person's skills or knowledge in his/her own discipline.
  • Wellness activities that assist individuals to be physically and mentally better able to perform their jobs (e.g., humor in the workplace, stress reduction, self-defense, nutrition, exercise, weight reduction).
  • Learning a second language to better communicate with the diverse student population.
  • Disaster preparedness.
  • Improving or learning how to deal with computers and technology.
  • Developing a new program to meet changing student needs.
  • Review of learning resource materials to eliminate out-dated items and make recommendations for additions.
  • Creating modules or computer instruction materials.
  • Student advising.
  • Meeting with faculty from different disciplines to create cross-disciplinary programs for students.
