Co-design is a form of learning partnership where learners and educators become partners in the creation of curricula or learning materials. This process can help give students a voice in their learning which can boost engagement and motivation, and allow them to capitalise on their strengths. We also hope there will be potential learning points for staff, adding to further understanding from the learner perspective.
This process is designed to be a safe space for sharing ideas, feedback and experiences. The AHSS Digital Learning Developers offer an unbiased facilitation, who will also help to lead the conversation, set expectations and can provide support at all stages of the process.
Part of the process, led by facilitator conversations, will be to gauge what the focus of the Co-Design workshop could be. It is important to focus on a particular aspect of a resource or module, where possible, as there is only a certain amount of time available during the workshop. However, we believe that there will be transferable learning outcomes for both staff and students in the design of future learning materials and assessment materials.
You could focus on anything from a single learning resource, to the assessment tasks within a module, to the look/feel of an entire Canvas Course.
The list below is a range of suggestions of aspects you could focus on during your Co-Design Process:
Learning Resources:
A digital/online learning resource (e.g. Discussion Forum Task, Reading Comprehension),
A particular lecture, lesson or lesson plan,
An overview look at a single topic or theme from the module,
Learning Outcomes:
How a particular learning outcome is achieved,
Assessment:
A single formative assessment task (e.g. Canvas Quiz),
A single summative assessment task (e.g. Essay),
A rubric for an assessment task,
Canvas VLE:
A particular aspect of your Canvas course (e.g. navigation, instructional guidance),
The accessibility of learning content on the Canvas course,
The range or types of learning materials put on the Canvas course,
Student Experience:
The support (or information about support) available to students,
The overall student experience of the module.

Is there a particular aspect that you would like to focus on during your Co-Design Process?
Before Workshop: 30 minute conversation with one of the facilitators to talk through priorities and ideas to focus on during the workshop. During this conversation, expectations and guidelines for the workshop will also be agreed. Ideally, the facilitators would like to meet staff and students separately prior to the workshop.
During Workshop: 90 minute virtual workshop (MS Teams). This workshop will be facilitated by one of the AHSS Digital Learning Developers, and you will be asked to contribute in the discussion between staff and students. Be prepared to talk and provide feedback during this open discussion.
After Workshop: Post-workshop questionnaire/discussion to review any actions that have been taken from the workshop discussion.
Share your Experiences (optional): You are invited to share your experiences from this process in the form of a blog entry, short video, or Show & Tell Webinar.
Before Workshop: 30 minute conversation with one of the facilitators to talk through priorities and ideas to focus on during the workshop.
During Workshop: 90 minute workshop.
After Workshop: 30 minutes post-workshop questionnaire/discussion. Additional staff time investment will depend on action points agreed during the workshop.
***
Total Time = 2hrs 30 mins (with additional thinking time and time to act on any agreed action-points).
There is flexibility for when your workshop will take place. The timing of the workshops will depend on Student and Staff availability as well as considerations for academic and extra-curricular priorities taking place.
The workshops will be online and hosted on MS Teams.
Staff: At least one member of staff. Teaching teams are also welcome to get involved together.
Students: We recommend at least 4 students. Ideally, the participant group should be as diverse as possible.
Facilitator(s): At least one facilitator, from the AHSS Digital Learning Team, who will lead the process.
Additional Persons: Depending on the agreed topic of focus for the workshop, we may suggest one or two additional experts to be involved. However, this will only be a suggestion.
