We are offering German and English conversation lessons to college students and adults who have an intermediate or higher level language command, possibly from longer-term stays in a country where these languages are spoken.

Admittedly, my real native language is German, but since I began learning at the age of 7, interacting with American friends and spending a year with a family in Florida to attend high school there, my level is equivalent to that of native speakers. Instead of a perfect Southern accent, however, I believe to speak in an easily understandable Americanized International English. From this perspective, I think I may give you one or the other piece of advice on pronunciation and intonation you might not get from a native instructor.

On top of this, if you are interested in studying both languages, it may be enlightening for you to explore the second language through the eyes of the first, stronger one. As both English and German are Germanic languages, researching them as a pair will allow you to see the similarities in grammar and vocabulary. Let's, however, beware of false friends, which are words and expressions that look or sound alike but do not have the same meaning in both languages!

The lessons contents are going to be like a Japanese "okonomiyaki", which means that you can freely choose the topics according to your hobbies and fields of interest (e.g. music, modern culture, travel, business...) as well as your learning goals. This is because I believe that your own eager interest in a topic is the most decisive factor for your learning progress, so we should approach the lessons with an attitude that is as free and open-minded as that of children when picking up their first and subsequent languages.

Of course, we can use any teaching materials that you like, but I will also provide texts, and AV materials from other sources, such as the Internet.

If you want to use your smartphone, tablet, or PC apps, I am happy to support this, but ― since I only have Android and Windows ― if you are using any Apple tools, I recommend they should be compatible for exchanging notes and annotations (such as Evernote or Microsoft One Note, for example).

Due to restrictions in space and to the non-business purpose of my home office, unfortunately I cannot accept your visit, but I can either come to your home or workplace, or we can meet in a public place like a café or family restaurant. Again, as our voices and noises and those of other guests are likely to be mutually annoying, I believe that a coworking space would be the ideal solution. There are several ones now in the Nagoya Station, Sasashima, Fushimi, and Sakae areas that can be easily accessed. (They usually demand a membership or visitor fee, but since that includes free drinks from a vending machine, they are ― if at all ― only slightly more expensive than usual cafés.)

At any rate, to speak with the title of youth novelist Erich Kästner's famous piece of work, let me become the "Flying Classroom" to fulfill your needs.
