Karen trained as comprehensive nurse in New Zealand and has worked clinically as a mental health nurse in adult acute in-patient and community mental health for more than 20 years. Karen has a passion for improving the health outcomes of people who experience mental health and alcohol and substance use disorders, and increasing role of advanced practice mental health nurses within the tertiary mental health and primary health care services.
In her role as a teaching research academic at the Curtin School of Nursing, she teaches mental health within the Bachelor of Nursing and Graduate Entry Masters courses, supports students completing their Masters and PhD programs, and conduct clinical research within the mental health clinical setting.
Karen and her colleges established Cockburn Wellbeing in 2016 as part of their program of research to improve the physical health outcomes of people who experience mental health issues.
Outside work Karen like to dance, play golf and relax with her friends.
Nurse Practitioner - Specialist in Drug and Alcohol Addictions
Calum is our Nurse Practitioner who specialises in working with people with drug and alcohol issues and associated mental health issues. Originally from Scotland, Calum left his homeland in 2002 to take advantage of the fabulous climate we enjoy in Australia. Calum has worked in mental health for over 35 years and has spent many of the last 25 years working in the drug and alcohol field. He strives to provide the best and most appropriate services and care to people who often feel marginalised and judged in society. He has been working as a specialist Nurse Practitioner with Cockburn Wellbeing for around five years. He provides a comprehensive assessment and, with the patient, creates a realistic and achievable plan. When not working with Cockburn Wellbeing, Calum enjoys golf, reading, travelling and walking his dogs.
Nurse Practitioner - Mental Health
Tammy has worked in the mental health field for over 20 years in various settings across the Perth metro area. She has been an Authorised Mental Health Practitioner for the past 15 years and is employed as a Community Mental Health nurse part-time at Fremantle Mental Health Service. Tammy also work as Nurse Practitioner casually for Telethon Speech and Hearing, assisting with indigenous health care in rural and remote regions and working with Cockburn Wellbeing for the last 18 months. She has been a NP representative voting member of the WA Psychotropic medication group for the past two years. Tammy is passionate about providing accessible mental health support to a diverse adult community and believes in working collaboratively to achieve the best outcomes with a non-judgmental and open attitude. Her interests outside of work include spending time with family and friends; she is a keen bushwalker and gardener.
Administrative - Research Assistant
Jo has been with Cockburn Wellbeing for the last three years; having a background in the management of dental practices. She needed a change and has used her skill set to assist with the day-to-day administration of Cockburn Wellbeing. It will be Jo that you speak to on the phone; she is here to help with any queries.
